2nd Global Conference Fashion and Photography: An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Project

Fashion and Photography
2nd Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Friday 12th March 2021 - Saturday 13th March 2021
Lisbon, Portugal

Due to the postponement of this event in relation to the Covid pandemic, we are delighted to be able to unexpectedly reopen the Call for Submissions for the newly rescheduled dates.

In the early 20th century, fashion and photography were indelibly wedded through the efforts of a number of photographers, fashion designers, and magazine publishers. Once these cultural power shapers created the form, fashion photography took on a life of its own and became - perhaps always was - art. This art form has since been elevated to heights such that being a fashion photographer can be seen as a very important chapter in many well-known photographers' career: designers rely on them; models request them; magazines use their work: celebrities choose them for shoots; and the power they have to represent others is beyond compare in today's, 21st century image-driven world.

Following our first Fashion and Photography conference in Palermo in 2018, we are further broadening the interdisciplinary mix and range of potential discussions and activities. Whether dance, theatre, drama theory, directing or performance practice, the different aspects of the performing arts will be explored and developed alongside previous discussions, especially with the new challenges of technology along with the changes in audiences and performers in the 21st century.

Our Fashion and Photography: 2nd Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary event will examine the dynamics of all these (and related) fields. In a world which is experiencing the transforming realities of globalization, with people engaging at all levels and in diverse ways, the intersections and engagements created at the interface of all the modes of representation involved in these areas and activities are paramount. They involve cultural, social, commercial, artistic, financial, and political issues, and from the bottom to the top can determine power relations, careers, sexual norms and deviance, and more.

We live in a period of so-called hyper-consumption which encourages individuals to consume for their own personal pleasure. Fast fashion, trends in sustainable and recyclable fashion, the rise of performance fashion and fashion as performance art denotes a society now defined by movement, fluidity, and flexibility. Performance from ballet to theatre, the catwalk to festivals, is increasingly oriented towards pleasure and satisfaction, a fleeting hedonism which quickly changes focus. The experience is mixed with tensions, conflicts, and even anxiety. The uncertainties and fears of 21st century living are reflected in fashion, performance and all forms of visual representations.

This conference aims to consider ways in which we can re-imagine our practices in relation to others, our history, and the environment with a view to forming a selective innovative interdisciplinary publication to engender further collaboration and discussion, whilst also continuing the evolution of the project.

Unlike other conferences or gatherings, our event proposes to step outside the traditional conference setting and offer opportunities for photographers, designers, practitioners, theorists, independent scholars, academics, performers, writers, and others to intermingle, providing platforms for interdisciplinary interactions that are fruitful and conducive to broadening horizons and sparking future projects, collaborations, and connections.

We are excited to accept proposals for presentations, displays, exhibits, round tables, panels, interactive workshops and more. Below is a non-exhaustive list of possible approaches, all of them residing at the point of connection between Fashion and Photography.

What's so Special About a Progressive Connexions Event?
A fresh, friendly, dynamic format – at Progressive Connexions we are dedicated to breaking away from the stuffy, old-fashion conference formats, where endless presentations are read aloud off PowerPoints. We work to bring you an interactive format, where exchange of experience and information is alternated with captivating workshops, engaging debates and round tables, time set aside for getting to know each other and for discussing common future projects and initiatives, all in a warm, relaxed, egalitarian atmosphere.

A chance to network with international professionals – the beauty of our interdisciplinary events is that they bring together professionals from all over the world and from various fields of activity, all joined together by a shared passion. Not only will the exchange of experience, knowledge and stories be extremely valuable in itself, but we seek to create lasting, ever-growing communities around our projects, which will become a valuable resource for those belonging to them.

A chance to be part of constructing change – There is only one thing we love as much as promoting knowledge: promoting real, lasting social change by encouraging our participants to take collective action, under whichever form is most suited to their needs and expertise (policy proposals, measuring instruments, research projects, educational materials, etc.) We will support all such actions in the aftermath of the event as well, providing a platform for further discussions, advice from the experts on our Project Advisory Team and various other tools and intellectual resources, as needed.

An opportunity to discuss things that matter to you – Our events are not only about discussing how things work in the respective field, but also about how people work in that field – what are the struggles, problems and solutions professionals have found in their line of work, what are the areas where better communication among specialists is needed and how the interdisciplinary approach can help bridge those gaps and help provide answers to questions from specific areas of activity.

An unforgettable experience – When participating in a Progressive Connexions event, there is a good chance you will make some long-time friends. Our group sizes are intimate, our venues are comfortable and relaxing and our event locations are suited to the history and culture of the event.

Stoytelling and the Body: 2nd Global Interdisciplinary Conference

Storytelling and the Body
2nd Global Inclusive Conference

Friday 12th March 2021 - Saturday 13th March 2021
Lisbon, Portugal

Due to the postponement of this event in reltion to the Covid pandemic, we are delighted to be able to unexpectedly reopen the Call for Submissions for the newly rescheduled dates.

Bodies of all kinds surround us. Glamorous bodies, modified bodies, healthy or unhealthy bodies, engineered bodies, trafficked bodies, in/visible bodies, dismembered bodies, persecuted bodies - ubiquitous and ever-present, we cannot help but notice them. But how do understand them? Through stories. Both fiction and non-fiction stories shape our understanding of what constitutes a/the body in the first place, and then create norms about how a body should look, behave, experience the world and even how bodies should interact with each other. Further, stories shape our perceptions of what constitutes deviant, abject, non-normative, frightening or otherwise undesirable bodies.

The concept of the body itself has had a significant impact on the stories cultures have created and passed down through generations. Suffering bodies are central to the foundational narratives of various religious, cultural and political traditions. Monstrous bodies, sexual and erotic bodies, bodies at war, modified bodies, bodies coming of age and ageing, bodies being tested by nature, bodies enhanced by (bio)technology, politicised bodies and more, all are core to respective story genres.

Telling stories about the body is therefore loaded with ideological, political, sociological, theological, ontological and aesthetic implications. At a time when the world's socio-political landscape is dominated by the construction of barriers between people based on race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation and class, it is more important than ever to consider how stories about bodies, and the perception of bodies shaped by stories, not only foster division and difference but also inspire cohesion and belonging. And while stories can create both tangible and intangible barriers between human beings, they can also foster awareness and compassion for our common humanity.

Various disciplines, practices and professions have inscribed stories and bodies with particular meanings that, when viewed in isolation, can be skewed and limiting. Accordingly, our project aims to emphasize inclusivity, dialogue and collegiality. Building on our first two exceedingly successful, inclusive interdisciplinary events, Storytelling and the Body seeks to explore the complex, multi-faceted dynamics of this symbiotic relationship between storytelling and the body.

We offer opportunities for artists, photographers, practitioners, theorists, independent scholars, academics, performers, writers, and others to intermingle, providing platforms for interdisciplinary interactions that are fruitful and conducive to broadening horizons and sparking future projects, collaborations, and connections. Storytelling and the Body works with a view to generating and supporting dialogue, and creating a publication to engender further collaboration and discussion.

Key Topics
Our second global inclusive interdisciplinary conference welcomes proposals for presentations, displays, exhibits, round tables, panels, interactive workshops and other activities to stimulate engagement and discussion on any aspect of the interplay between stories and bodies. Subject to the presentations and discussions which take place at the meeting, there is a possibility for a selective publication to emerge with the aim of engendering further interdisciplinary collaboration and discussion.

Key topics, themes and issues for discussion may include, but are definitely not limited to:

Non-human bodies

Monstrous bodies
Bodies and donation of parts

Supernatural Connections: An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Supernatural Connections
An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Friday 12th march 2021 - Saturday 13th March 2021
Lisbon, Portugal

Due to the postponement of this event in light of the Covid pandemic, we are delighted to be able to unexpectedly reopen the Call for Submissions for the newly rescheduled dates.

As a constant and chilling presence in individual lives and the popular imagination, the supernatural, as a cultural phenomenon, is prone to repeated revivals and resurrections. Like some uncanny revenant, the supernatural re-emerges at crucial historical moments, often transforming to reflect the concerns of its epoch. Recent times have seen a sharp rise in occult practice amongst millennials, many of whom have rejected more traditional spiritual systems in favour of Wicca, witchcraft and astrology. The past two decades have also witnessed a proliferation of supernatural fiction, encompassing everything from populist works like Supernatural (2005 – present), Twilight (2008-2012), The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018 – present) and Siempre Bruja (2019) to critically-acclaimed texts like The Babadook (2014), The Witch (2015) Under the Shadow (2016) and Suspiria (2018). The reawakening of interest in the supernatural poses a wealth of questions about why the occult has once again seized hold of the popular imagination, while, at the same time, gesturing backwards to earlier eruptions of supernaturalism (witch trials, outbreaks of demonic possession, the nineteenth-century vogue for Spiritualism, the New-Age occultism of the 1960s and '70s).

But what does the current preoccupation with the supernatural say about contemporary societies, particularly in relation to issues of gender, sexuality and identity, socio-political anxieties, historical and personal trauma? Why does the supernatural provide such a potent vehicle for grappling with those issues? Why are some expressions of the supernatural more culturally acceptable than others? To what extent does the supernatural play a positive role in society, and to what extent does it provide a convenient scapegoat for the real-world dark impulses of human beings?

The Supernatural Connections conference seeks to provide a platform for exploring these questions from inclusive interdisciplinary perspectives by opening up new avenues of research and new conversations about the supernatural through papers, performances and panels focusing on any aspect of this complex, multifaceted topic with a view to forming an innovative interdisciplinary publication to engender further research and collaboration. The conference organisers are particularly interested in incorporating papers/ presentations from a diverse range of disciplines, including, but not limited to, literary and cultural studies, film studies, theology, psychology, the social and natural sciences, history, philosophy, sociology, education and anthropology. We also enthusiastically welcome submissions from practitioners, artists, writers, curators and others.

Key Topics
Potential topics may address any of the following topics; however, we are open to any submission that investigates the supernatural:

~ Critiques and defences of the supernatural and related belief systems
~ Comparisons between contemporary and historical understandings of the supernatural
~ How creative practice shapes our perception of the supernatural (e.g. film, television, videogames, music, theatre, literature, art, etc.)
~ Impact of cultural, national, regional identity on perceptions of the supernatural
~ Ideological implications of the supernatural: how the supernatural reflects and informs political anxieties and general attitudes about the human body, race, gender, sexuality, class and nationality
~ Interface between science, technology and the supernatural
~ Commodifying the supernatural (dark tourism, spiritualists/fortune-tellers, etc.)
~ Supernaturalism and Indigenous cultures
~ Physiological/neurological perspectives on the supernatural
~ Impact of beliefs in the supernatural on everyday practices, and the implications of these practices
~ Interface between education and belief in the supernatural
~ Health, wellness and supernatural beliefs
~ Analyses of case studies of supernatural occurrences

Storytelling and Trauma: 2nd Global Interdisciplinary Conference

Storytelling and Trauma
Special Focus: Abuse

2nd Global Interdisciplinary Conference
Friday 12th March 2021 - Saturday 13th March 2021
Lisbon, Portugal

The experience of trauma is central to the human condition, but how we understand our experiences and explain them to others remains a subject of ongoing debate. The drive to tell the story of personal, communal and national traumas has taken many forms, ranging including oral and written narratives, visual art and music. The acts of creating and receiving these works has provided a means of coming to terms with traumatic events and their legacies. Though trauma may take many forms, abuse is arguably one of the most potent because of the physical, emotional and mental harm that comes with abusive interactions. For many who experience abuse, the desire to give voice to their trauma is countered by social or cultural attitudes about what constitutes abuse, what sorts of feelings are legitimate, which perspectives are worthy of being believed, and so forth. Yet, the omnipresence of stories and images of trauma and abuse across cultures and historical periods directs our attention to the ways the sharing and remembrance of pain – our own, and that of others – provides a way toward bearing witness, contemplating, processing and resolving the pain arising from this particular trauma. It is precisely because so much pressure can be brought to bear upon survivors to keep their trauma silent that it is crucial to explore the relationship between abuse and trauma.

The 2nd Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference – Storytelling and Trauma: Special Focus Abuse provides a platform for exploring how storytelling enables trauma caused by abuse to be brought to light, processed and re-signified through the connection between memory and communication, entailing what Cathy Caruth calls "an act of departure". Disruptive experiences impact survivors' self-perception and world awareness, both of which are informed by the fullness of individual experiences. It is therefore essential to approach the relationship between trauma, abuse and storytelling from an inter-disciplinary approach that is able to apprehend the implications of empathy, desensitization, witness, pain, confrontation and resolution of problems, and the simultaneity of past and present as these concepts are understood across relevant cultural, religious, psychological, political, geographical, linguistic, literary, artistic, technological, scientific, social and philosophical dimensions.

From the conversations and dialogues which take place, our intention is to form a selective innovative interdisciplinary publication to engender further research and collaboration.

Key Topics
We welcome participants to share research, best practice, case studies, art, performances, personal narratives and other relevant approaches. Proposals on any relevant topic are invited, particularly those from clinical, NGO, activism, fine and performing arts, legal, law enforcement, religious, victims/survivors perspectives. Please note it is also our intention to provide a fruitful, safe and respectful sharing space.

At the end of the conference, our aim is to further develop the discussions and dialogues into new and continued interdisciplinary research, workshops and publications which will help us make sense of the topics discussed in relation to the contested aspects of the discussions.

We welcome proposals from a wide range of perspectives and voices, on topics including but not limited to:

300 word proposals, presentations, abstracts and other forms of contribution and participation should be submitted by Friday 4th September 2020. Other forms of participation should be discussed in advance with the Organising Chairs.

All submissions will be at least double reviewed, under anonymous (blind) conditions, by a global panel drawn from members of the Project Team, The Development Team and the Advisory Board. In practice our procedures usually entail that by the time a proposal is accepted, it will have been triple and quadruple reviewed.

You will be notified of the panel's decision by Friday 18th September 2020.

If your submission is accepted for the conference, a full draft of your contribution should be submitted by Friday 15th January 2021.

Abstracts and proposals may be in Word, RTF or Notepad formats with the following information and in this order:
a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in the programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) type of proposal e.g. paper presentation, workshop, panel, film, performance, etc, f) body of proposal, g) up to 10 keywords.

E-mails should be entitled: Storytelling Trauma Submission

What's so Special?

Sport and the Power to Inspire Change - Virtual Symposium

Sport and the Power to Inspire Change: A Global Virtual Symposium
with Danny Crates, Phil Davies, Derek Peaple and Karl Spracklen
Tuesday 21st July 2020 - Wednesday 22nd July 2020

'Sport', as Mandela famously observed, 'has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers.'

The power of sport to serve as a force for social good is well-documented. Various types of sports bring people from different generations and backgrounds together for a common purpose, provide a sense of security, belonging and identity, enjoyment and excitement; and for participants a sense of fulfilment, well-being and physical fitness. In short, sport and its associated values can act as a powerful driving force for inspiring individual growth, social change and collective engagement.

Carefully crafted around inclusive interdisciplinary approaches to exploring the power of sport to positively change lives and communities, we are excited to welcome you to a unique two-day virtual symposium.

Our innovative and interactive format is designed to replicate the collective learning experience of a residential conference in an online environment, offering delegates opportunities to reflect on, question and engage with live presentations from leading practitioners from the world of applied sport.

Key Themes and Engagement Leaders
The symposium is structured to create inclusive spaces where four key or 'hot' themes can be explored.

Theme 1: Paralympism and Personal Growth
led by Danny Crates

Danny won gold in the men's 800m at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens and is now an established personal performance coach, as well as a global Keynote speaker, published author and TV presenter and pundit. He brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding around building high-performance teams and individuals. He has over 20 years experience speaking to businesses around the world on the key elements to success, combined with 12 years as an international athlete, training with – and most importantly, learning from – some of the best athletes and coaches in the world. Danny talks about overcoming hurdles, resilience, performing under pressure, dealing with setbacks, goal setting, incremental gain, stepping outside of your comfort zone, and so much more.

Theme 2: Education and Learning
led by Derek Peaple

Derek was recently shortlisted as TES Headteacher of the Year and praised by Ofsted for his 'values-driven' approach to 25 years of school leadership. This hot seat session will aim to explore how sport, and its associated values, has provided an interdisciplinary framework for the development of whole school culture and ethos. As a corollary, it will consider how this approach has shaped curriculum innovation and enrichment, personal development and student leadership and range of international learning partnerships.

Theme Three: Leadership and High Performance
led by Phil Davies

Phil is widely recognised as a world class rugby player and leader with a career spanning over 35 years and whose actions build high performance systems incorporating change and progression in the complex environment of professional Rugby Union. This session will discuss leadership and high performance through the elite sport of professional Rugby union, how Process and Passion underpinned by a philosophy of people centred, development-driven and competition supported system help teams achieve their goals. This approach provides an aspirational direction, inspirational actions along the journey to achieve the team's purpose, vision, and values that drive the plan set out by all the key people involved.

Fans and Fan Culture
led by Karl Spracklen

Karl has held senior officer positions within the Leisure Studies Association, and was its Chair until 2013. He is closely involved in the International Sociological Associations's Research Committee 13 (Leisure). This session will explore how being a sport fan creates community and identity, but that community and identity can be problematic when it harms the self and our social relations. Karl will draw on his own fandom and academic debates to sketch the potentiality.
