Storytelling and the Body: 2nd Global Inclusive Conference

Storytelling and the Body
2nd Global Inclusive Conference

Sunday 5th July 2020 to Monday 6th July 2020
Bratislava, Slovakia

Bodies of all kinds surround us. Glamorous bodies, modified bodies, healthy or unhealthy bodies, engineered bodies, trafficked bodies, in/visible bodies, dismembered bodies, persecuted bodies - ubiquitous and ever-present, we cannot help but notice them. But how do we understand them? Through stories. Both fiction and non-fiction stories shape our understanding of what constitutes a/the body in the first place, and we then create norms about how a body should look, behave, experience the world and even how bodies should interact with each other. Further, stories shape our perceptions of what constitutes deviant, abject, non-normative, frightening or otherwise undesirable bodies.

The concept of the body itself has had a significant impact on the stories cultures have created and passed down through generations. Suffering bodies are central to the foundational narratives of various religious, cultural and political traditions. Monstrous bodies, sexual and erotic bodies, bodies at war, modified bodies, bodies coming of age and ageing, bodies being tested by nature, bodies enhanced by (bio)technology, politicised bodies and more, all are core to respective story genres.

Telling stories about the body is therefore loaded with ideological, political, sociological, theological, ontological and aesthetic implications. At a time when the world's socio-political landscape is dominated by the construction of barriers between people based on race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation and class, it is more important than ever to consider how stories about bodies, and the perception of bodies shaped by stories, not only foster division and difference but also inspire cohesion and belonging. And while stories can create both tangible and intangible barriers between human beings, they can also foster awareness and compassion for our common humanity.

Various disciplines, practices and professions have inscribed stories and bodies with particular meanings that, when viewed in isolation, can be skewed and limiting. Accordingly, our project aims to emphasise inclusivity, dialogue and collegiality. Building on our first two exceedingly successful, inclusive interdisciplinary events, Storytelling and the Body seeks to explore the complex, multi-faceted dynamics of this symbiotic relationship between storytelling and the body.

We offer opportunities for artists, photographers, practitioners, theorists, independent scholars, academics, performers, writers, and others to intermingle, providing platforms for interdisciplinary interactions that are fruitful and conducive to broadening horizons and sparking future projects, collaborations, and connections. Storytelling and the Body works with a view to generating and supporting dialogue, and creating a publication to engender further collaboration and discussion.

Key Topics
Our second global inclusive interdisciplinary conference welcomes proposals for presentations, displays, exhibits, round tables, panels, interactive workshops and other activities to stimulate engagement and discussion on any aspect of the interplay between stories and bodies. Subject to the presentations and discussions which take place at the meeting, there is a possibility for a selective publication to emerge with the aim of engendering further interdisciplinary collaboration and discussion.

Fashion and Photography: 2nd Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Fashion and Photography
2nd Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Sunday 5th July 2020 - Monday 6th July 2020
Bratislava, Slovakia

In the early 20th century, fashion and photography were indelibly wedded through the efforts of a number of photographers, fashion designers, and magazine publishers. Once these cultural power shapers created the form, fashion photography took on a life of its own and became - perhaps always was - art. This art form has since been elevated to heights such that being a fashion photographer can be seen as a very important chapter in many well-known photographers' career: designers rely on them; models request them; magazines use their work: celebrities choose them for shoots; and the power they have to represent others is beyond compare in today's, 21st century image-driven world.

Following our first Fashion and Photography conference in Palermo in 2018, we are further broadening the interdisciplinary mix and range of potential discussions and activities. Whether dance, theatre, drama theory, directing or performance practice, the different aspects of the performing arts will be explored and developed alongside previous discussions, especially with the new challenges of technology along with the changes in audiences and performers in the 21st century.

Our Fashion and Photography: 2nd Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary event will examine the dynamics of all these (and related) fields. In a world which is experiencing the transforming realities of globalization, with people engaging at all levels and in diverse ways, the intersections and engagements created at the interface of all the modes of representation involved in these areas and activities are paramount. They involve cultural, social, commercial, artistic, financial, and political issues, and from the bottom to the top can determine power relations, careers, sexual norms and deviance, and more.

We live in a period of so-called hyper-consumption which encourages individuals to consume for their own personal pleasure. Fast fashion, trends in sustainable and recyclable fashion, the rise of performance fashion and fashion as performance art denotes a society now defined by movement, fluidity, and flexibility. Performance from ballet to theatre, the catwalk to festivals, is increasingly oriented towards pleasure and satisfaction, a fleeting hedonism which quickly changes focus. The experience is mixed with tensions, conflicts, and even anxiety. The uncertainties and fears of 21st century living are reflected in fashion, performance and all forms of visual representations.

This conference aims to consider ways in which we can re-imagine our practices in relation to others, our history, and the environment with a view to forming a selective innovative interdisciplinary publication to engender further collaboration and discussion, whilst also continuing the evolution of the project.

Unlike other conferences or gatherings, our event proposes to step outside the traditional conference setting and offer opportunities for photographers, designers, practitioners, theorists, independent scholars, academics, performers, writers, and others to intermingle, providing platforms for interdisciplinary interactions that are fruitful and conducive to broadening horizons and sparking future projects, collaborations, and connections.

We are excited to accept proposals for presentations, displays, exhibits, round tables, panels, interactive workshops and more. Below is a non-exhaustive list of possible approaches, all of them residing at the point of connection between Fashion and Photography.

Key Topics

Key topics, themes and issues for discussion may include, but are definitely not limited to:

GKA ARTS 2020 | International Conference on Arts and Cultures | Spain - October 2020

GKA ARTS 2020 - II INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ARTS AND CULTURES
October 1-2, 2020 | Universidad de Cádiz | Cádiz, Andalusia - Spain

The International Conference on Arts and Cultures is an important space for the exchange of ideas and practices among international researchers, functioning as an interdisciplinary forum and as a seed for future collaborative projects. The conference will feature prominent speakers and posters, workshops and seminars given by professors, researchers and specialists from the public and private sectors in three different languages: English, Spanish and Portuguese.

In 2020, the main topic of the conference will be
“CINEMA AS SUBVERSIVE ART: AVANT-GARDE, RESISTANCE AND REARRANGEMENTS”

When defining the work The cinema as a subversive art of the Austrian-born film critic Amos Vogel, the II International Conference on Arts and Cultures uses the same title of this work as a reference, not to limit itself to those desires or tastes of Viennese by censored films for its disturbing content and with explicitly sexual or violent images, but for seeing in the cinema, in addition to the above, an inciting, answering, transforming, avant-garde and critical art. In short, it is to appreciate from the beginning of the cinema its competences to be art and its capacity as a catalyst for socio-cultural changes, at national and international level.

Delegates can also submit a proposal addressing one of the recurring topics of the conference:

Topic 1: Art, Culture, and Society
Topic 2: Management of Culture and the Arts
Topic 3: Cultural and Artistic Heritage
Topic 4: Curating, History of Art, and the Art Market
Topic 5: Theory of Art and Contemporary Esthetic
Topic 6: Art, Technology, and the Media

Selected conference papers will be published in "The International Arts and Cultures Review".

The next DEADLINE for submitting a proposal to the conference (i.e., a title and an abstract) is DECEMBER 9th, 2019.

True Crime: An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

True Crime
An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Friday 3rd July 2020 - Saturday 4th July 2020
Bratislava, Slovakia

Humankind has long been fascinated with accounts of crimes and criminals. Our oldest texts are littered with narratives about wrongdoing, from the Bible to the Arabi Nisollasaya and beyond. Stories about real cases – with real victims and real perpetrators – are just as riveting, as evidenced by the crime pamphlets of the 16th-century, 17th-century chap books and murder ballads, and the mass street literature sold at public executions in the Victorian era.

The public’s seemingly insatiable appetite for gore, misery and retribution is undiminished today. True crime regularly tops poll as one of the most popular literary genres and it often focuses on the worst of humanity: murderers, necrophiles, cannibals, and the like. Only a small percentage of the world’s murders are committed by serial killers, yet approximately 40% of true crime books focus on serial murder, often promising a glimpse into the mind of fiends such as Ted Bundy, Andrei Chikatilo and Myra Hindley. Although generally considered to be ‘low culture’, salacious and disreputable, true crime narratives have also garnered critical plaudits, with Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood becoming a classic of American literature and Normal Mailer’s The Executioner’s Song winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1980. In recent years, true crime has entered a golden age, with emerging media forms bringing it into the mainstream. Podcasts like Sarah Koenig’s Serial and streaming documentary series, such as Andrew Jarecki’s The Jinx and Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi’s Making a Murderer, have challenged convictions, uncovered new evidence and in some cases even impacted judicial processes.

True crime’s focus has also shifted; salacious retellings of serial murders have been replaced by thoughtful examinations of neglected cold cases, and righteous opposition to corrupt and prejudiced institutions. The reader, viewer or listener of such narratives has also been transformed from a passive consumer of other people’s misery to something much more self-aware and critical, at times, even crossing over into an active detective role, as evidenced by the dedicated teams of amateur sleuths working in Reddit subs and Facebook groups on cases such as the 1969 murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik.

Against this backdrop, our True Crime conference will explore the popularity of true crime, past and present, considering how these stories expose deeper societal issues and tensions. We will examine the links between real crimes and crime fiction, how one feeds into the other with sometimes horrifying consequences; and examine the moral landscape of true crime, including its potential to re-traumatise survivors, victims’ families and witnesses.

Key Topics
From the full range of disciplinary, professional and social perspectives, our focus will rest on all stakeholders in the true crime landscape, from real-life offenders and victims, to law enforcement, the judiciary, probation services, reporters, and the writers, filmmakers and consumers of true crime narratives. The aim is to generate inclusive dialogues involving researchers, practitioners, artists, activists, legal professionals, clinicians, social workers, probation officers, representatives from the voluntary sector, individuals whose lives have been impacted by true crime and others with an interest in the field with a view to to forming a selective innovative interdisciplinary publication to engender further research and collaboration.. We particularly welcome creative responses to the subject, such as poetry/prose, short film screenings/original drama, installations, and alternative presentation styles that engage the audience and foster debate.

Topics for discussion include, but are not restricted to:

~ the true crime industry;
~ the popularity of true crime television series and podcasts;
~ the ‘Netflix effect’;
~ international and transnational perspectives on, and variations in, true crime;
~ the morality and ethics of true crime;
~ legal and judicial process;
~ the politics of true crime;
~ true crime and psychology;
~ miscarriages of justice;
~ neoliberalism, social breakdown, mistrust of elites;
~ institutional racism, sexism and other prejudices;
~ true crime and gender (perpetrators, victims, consumers, producers);
~ the democratisation of the genre;
~ the historical trajectory of true crime;
~ street ballads, broadsides, penny dreadfuls, the Newgate Chronicles;
~ true crime and music;
~ new journalism and the non-fiction novel;
~ how accounts of crimes, past and present, reveal societal mores and attitudes;
~ balanced reporting vs. sensationalism – true crime and the news media;
~ the poetics of true crime;
~ Reddit subs, Facebook groups and amateur sleuthing;
~ focalising true crime, from inside the mind of the murderer to victim-centred perspectives;
~ the science of true crime – DNA profiling, fibre analysis, forensic topology, etc.;
~ audience participation in true crime narratives;
~ the impact of multi-media on true crime;
~ the valorisation of the serial killer;
~ victimology;
~ cold cases;
~ Fandom – ‘murder clubs’, reading groups, online forums;
~ the future of true crime.

An unforgettable experience – When participating in a Progressive Connexions event, there is a good chance you will make some long-time friends. Our group sizes are intimate, our venues are comfortable and relaxing and our event locations are suited to the history and culture of the event.

Ethos
