134753: 2015 Book Conference: The Event of the Book - A Common Ground Conference

2015 Book Conference: The Event of the Book - A Common Ground Conference

Vancouver, Canada
University of British Columbia - Robson Square
19-20 October 2015

Proposals for paper presentations, workshops, posters, or colloquia are invited for the Thirteenth International Conference on Books, Publishing, and Libraries being held at the University of British Columbia - Robson Square, in Vancouver, Canada from 19-20 October 2015. We welcome proposals from a variety of disciplines and perspectives that will contribute to the conference discourse. We also encourage faculty and research students to submit joint proposals for paper presentations or colloquia.

SPECIAL CONFERENCE FOCUS:

"The Event of the Book"

The 2015 Book Conference coincides with the Vancouver Writer's Festival. As the social worlds of the book are being evermore mediated by digital modes of production and distribution, how do we make sense of 'The Event of the Book?' At a micro level, the event of the book is the experience of holding a material object. At the macro level, the event of the book is the experience of person-to-person events such as writers' festivals. How might the digital re-energize - 'materialize' - the event of the book? How can the affordances of digital technologies re-configure how we understand the media and social practices of the event of the book at micro and macro levels?

The 2015 meeting will feature a special focus on this thought-provoking subject. We welcome open debate, discourse, and research from participants that center on this special topic, as well as any other themes or issues relevant to books, publishing, and libraries. We also encourage faculty and research students to submit joint proposals for paper presentations, colloquia, or panel discussions.

CONFERENCE THEMES:

Proposals for paper presentations, workshops or colloquia are invited that discuss the broader themes listed below. In addition to the special focus, paper presentations will be grouped into one of the following categories for presentation at the conference:

Theme 1: Publishing Practices: Past, Present, and Future
Theme 2: Reading, Writing, Literacy, and Learning
Theme 3: Books and Libraries
Special Focus: The Event of the Book

If you are unable to attend the conference in person, you may still join the community and submit your article for peer review and possible publication, upload an online presentation, and enjoy subscriber access to The International Journal of the Book.

Proposals for in-person presentations should be submitted by 22 SEPTEMBER 2015 (title and short abstract). Proposals submitted after this day will be accommodated in non-themed sessions at the conference or are eligible for community membership registrations (no attendance at conference required with community membership presentations).

Third International Conference on Emerging Research Paradigms in Business and Social Science

Third International Conference on Emerging Research Paradigms in Business and Social Science
24th to 26th November 2015
Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Middlesex University Dubai takes great pleasure in announcing the Third International Conference on Emerging Research Paradigms in Business and Social Sciences (ERPBSS-2015). For the nearly 200 delegates representing about 100 international academic institutions the First (2011) and Second (2013) International Conference on ERPBSS provided a forum for inter-disciplinary dialogue and forms of scholastic communication that transcended disciplinary and subject-specific boundaries.

In the Third International Conference ERPBSS 2015 we seek to explore "What's Next?". The world faces incredibly complex changes that shape our collective futures. We live in a time of increased mobility and connectedness, as forces of globalization and technological change are redefining the economic, social, political, and physical systems of the world. Inevitably, ideas and knowledge are transcending their traditional disciplinary and geographic boundaries. While this transformation offers increasing opportunities for innovation, it also contributes to increasingly complex global and local challenges that must be met with increasing attention to a more sustainable future.

The eight tracks of the ERPBSS 2015 Conference are:

1) Accounting, Finance and Economics
2) Contemporary Psychology
3) Education Training and Development
4) Information and Communication Technology
5) International Law and International Relations
6) Management and Marketing
7) Media, Journalism, and Communication
8) Tourism and Hospitality

Through these tracks the conference intention is to bring together perspectives from multiple disciplinary and epistemological perspectives. The design of the conference will provide wider opportunities for dialogue than conferences with narrower scopes. Additionally, this year we are launching the "Research Matters" visual paper session, which offers delegates an opportunity to engage more in-depth with presenters. We also invite delegates to submit proposals for Organised Symposium around a specific topic.

The Superhero / The Superhero Project

The Superhero
The Superhero Project

Monday 7th September - Wednesday 9th September 2015
Mansfield College, Oxford, United Kingdom

Call for Presentations:

"Superman! Champion of the oppressed, the physical marvel who had sworn to devote his existence to helping those in need." - Action Comics #1, 1938 (DC Comics)

In the twenty-first century, in which notions of good versus evil have thrived, the word "hero" has taken on a striking resonance. As a consequence, the decades-old superhero of comic books (as established in the guise of Superman in 1938) has been thrust to the forefront of mainstream popular culture, present across multiple media and the character's signature emblems now among the most recognisable in the world, functioning as powerful, pervasive and vastly profitable brands.

Most notably, this domination is no more apparent than the realms of blockbuster cinema. With Superman: The Movie (1978) having provided an epic, special effects-fuelled spectacle finally worthy of the superhero's stature, and the vast cultural and commercial impact of Batman (1989), the superhero movie made a popular return to prominence with X-Men (2000), leading to billion-dollar earning and critically-lauded films such as The Dark Knight (2008) and The Avengers (2012) - and with more than thirty further films set to be released by 2020.

Meanwhile, real individuals are being elevated to the status of superhero - literally and metaphorically. The "First Responders" of the 9/11 attacks were labelled as super-heroic, new military technologies enable personnel to surpass their natural physical potential in combat, while the 2013 "Soldiers of Steel" media campaign directly equates US National Guard soldiers to the titular "Man of Steel", Superman.

After seventy-seven years of comic book existence, the superhero remains regarded as an inspirational figure, but also a divisive one, perceived in some quarters as a promoter of violence and vigilantism. Superheroes position themselves as purveyors of a specific set of moral values, sometimes above the law, but always striving for the greater good. Superheroes are typically depicted in a constant struggle with notions of personal responsibility, and questions of identity and destiny, in line with Joseph Campbell's "Monomyth".

Perceived as a modern form of mythology or folklore, the superhero currently occupies a diverse and expansive space in modern popular culture. Yet, while still largely American in focus, the superhero has become increasingly international, capable of reflecting specific issues and operating as a powerful messenger of them - a power they have possessed since their inception. As more and more people wear the symbols of superheroes (via t-shirts at al) as an expression of values as well as fandom, the superhero is becoming us.

The 1st Global Conference on Superheroes invites inter-disciplinary discussion on superheroes and the notion of the super-heroic. Areas of discussion could include: the propagation of the notion of the soldier as superhero; post-human technological augmentation and the cyborg body as enabled by Google Glass; the real-life costumed superhero group known as The Rain City Superhero Movement; India's superhero Priya and the character's addressing of sexual violence; Marvel Comics' decision to change the gender of Norse god superhero Thor and the ethnicity of Spider-Man; superhero movies' presentation of urban mass disaster as spectacle; the co-opting of the Guy Fawkes mask as made famous by Alan Moore's V for Vendetta mask by social activist group Anonymous.

Indicative themes for discussion may include but are not limited to:

1. Post-Humanism:
- Technology and augmentation / armour
- Cyborgs
- Prosthesis
- The Ubermensch
- Mutations and genetic engineering

2. Dual Identities:
- The power of the mask
- Alter-egos and secret identities
- Costume and Disguise
- Cosplay

3. Gender and Ethnicity:
- Hyper-masculinity
- Depictions of the female superhero
- Ethnic diversity in superhero comics and their readership.

4. Sexuality:

- Queer readings of established characters
- Gay Representation in Superhero Comics
- Camp and the Superhero
- Superheroes vs Sexual Violence

5. Deconstruction:
- The anti-hero
- The post-9/11 Superhero
- The Everyman superhero

6. Social Responsibility:
- Vigilantism
- Superheroes as role models
- Childhood play
- Heroism and cowardice

7. The Heroic and the Patriotic:
- The monomyth (the hero's journey)
- Patriotism and nationalism
- National personification
- The Soldier as Superhero
- "Truth, justice and the American way"

8. Pop Culture Depictions:
- Adaptation
- The superhero as brand
