| Migrations 4th Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference Sunday 10th July - Monday 11th July 2022 Athens, Greece Although COVID-19 has disrupted all forms of human mobility, including the closing of borders, and the halting of travel worldwide, according to the UN International Migration 2020 Highlights, growth in the number of international migrants has been robust over the last two decades, reaching 281 million people living outside their country of origin in 2020, up from 173 million in 2000 and 221 million in 2010. According to the IOM, before the COVID-19 pandemic, international migrants, who made up 3.5 percent of the world's population in 2019, contributed nearly 10 per cent of global GDP (roughly $ 6.7 trillion to global GDP). Moreover, according to the UNHCR, the persistence of extreme poverty in large areas of the world, the impacts of climate change, the continuation of internal conflicts, regional wars, and religious or sectarian inspired violence have forcibly displaced a record number of over 82.4 million people worldwide. At the same time, receiving and transit states keep closing their borders, forcing economic migrants and refugees to look for new routes and ways in search of a better life or a safe haven. Governments are struggling to balance their immigration and asylum policies between their obligations to uphold the fundamental human rights of migrants and the growing domestic pressures of xenophobic sentiments and nativist attitudes, including the increase in "white supremacist", "far-right" or "extreme right-wing" groups around the world. One thing is certain: international migrations will continue to increase and reshape the world as we know it. The way governments and societies decide to deal with the causes of migrations and their social, economic and political impacts will open new debates on redefining the existing international human rights instruments to protect the most vulnerable of our humanity. Key Topics Our fourth interdisciplinary Migrations conference seeks to build on the success of past events and forge a lasting network of professionals in all fields related to this topic. We aim to discuss and explore the main issues, pressing matters, and recent developments in this field of research and practice, to identify areas to be subsequently explored in further depth, and to generate collaborative action that will lead to real, lasting change in the way migration and migrants are perceived and approached in institutional and informal settings. Some of the suggested issues to be approached include (but are not limited to): The impacts of Covid-19 on Migration Covid-19 impacted the flow of regular migration, causing severe economic and social effects. However, remittances remained high. These impacts are still being measured, and it is of much interest to explore the methodologies and results from such studies. Added to the former, states closed borders causing refugees, and economic and survival migrants to look for more dangerous routes or remain stranded at borders in unbearable conditions. Covid-19 also made the work of those who assist refugees or those in a protracted situation very challenging, causing more profound humanitarian crises in refugee camps or transit routes. Defining and Measuring Migration Identifying past, present, and new push-and-pull factors for migration, analyzing trends in migration, understanding the political economies of migration, defining categories of migration and migrants, presenting relevant data and instruments in migration studies. The Current Refugee Crises Refugee situations, struggles, profiles, stories, efforts at integration, international responses, conditions in refugee camps, requirements for receiving asylum, policies, best practices, international responsibilities, human rights issues, media coverage. Policy and politics Migration policy trends in Western societies and worldwide, impacts and effectiveness of existing policies, the resurgence of xenophobia and nativism, centralized vs. decentralized policies, "immigration federalism," geopolitical ramifications of national and international migration policies. Narratives of Displacement Migration stories, folklore, art, community building. Migration and the Media Depiction of refugees, migrants and migration in the media, the role of social media and new technologies in facilitating migration and maintaining transnational migrant networks, the role of the press in creating the "other" and increasing/defusing social tension between migrants and locals. Looking into the Future Scenarios for future trends in migration challenges for the future generations of today's migrants, future challenges for the sending and receiving countries. Professing in the Field of Migration Issues, hardships, frustrations, communication needs, big and small victories and bright, hopeful moments of professionals working towards the integration and aid of refugees or migrants in general, studying migration and migrants, drafting or applying migration policies or legislation. | Testimony: Memory, Trauma, Truth, Engagement 3rd Global Interdisciplinary Conference Friday 8th July 2022 - Saturday 9th July 2022 Athens, Greece The increased visibility of police brutality, forced disappearances, discoveries of unmarked and mass graves, and gendered killings, among other manifestations of systematic violence compels us to grapple with stories of loss, grief, and mourning. To give testimony, to tell and retell what one has witnessed, across time and generations - an historical inheritance of memory, trauma, and engagement. These accounts often take the form of testimony, that is, autobiographical narratives that present evidence of first-person accounts of human rights abuses, violence and war, and life under conditions of social oppression. Testimony strongly encourages us to rethink the concepts of memory and trauma, closure, grieving and mourning, and to (re)imagine the entanglement of past, present, and future by opening a space for voices that have been historically silenced and/or censored. It is a genre that continues to thrive in the twenty-first century - perhaps even more so since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic - and one that encompasses a diversity of expression or representation from oral to written as well as nonfictional to fictional. Testimonial production implies a spectrum of disciplines, art forms, geographical and historical contexts as well as multi-lingual realities, that includes topics such as: human rights and storytelling; trauma and memory; ethics, witnessing, and reconciliation; affect theory and empathy studies; critical pedagogy. Scholars continue to engage questions that address issues of generic hybridity and metamorphosis; uses, reception, and production of testimony; ethical and aesthetic contexts of testimony; and legal and juridical frameworks of testimony. It is through interdisciplinarity that an examination can be made of the impact and contributions of testimonial production within the cultures of redress and transnational justice processes for both the producers of testimony and their audience. The third conference in the Testimony series marks the launch of a new five year Special Collaborative Project. Key Topics This call for proposals asks for proposals in the context of a global pandemic, war, rape, and State crimes, and drawing on the concepts of memory, trauma, truth, and engagement. This conference aims to examine the genres and contexts of testimonial production that considers testimony in terms of its trajectories into questions dealing with memory, trauma, truth, and/or witness engagement. | Textures of Emotions: Storytelling and Textiles A Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference Friday 8th July - Saturday 9th July 2022 Athens, Greece Textiles surround us in our everyday lives. From the clothes we wear to cover our bodies and communicate who we are (or who we would like to be), to household linens and domestic fabrics with which we dress our homes. Textiles are everywhere and hold the memory of our existence. Ubiquitous, they are often undervalued and unseen but under certain circumstances they become totemic, charged with emotion, potent with meaning and powerful in holding memory. Textiles can be used to convey a political message though use as protest banners or flags - fought over, burned, claimed and reclaimed by different factions. Choices of clothing are used to foster ideas of identity and difference, expression of non-normative behaviours, bonding and tribalism as well as providing a way to provoke discussion, attitude and confrontation. They can also be used in more violent ways as gags, blindfolds, masks or as constrictive garments - corsets and foot bindings. Textiles have been used in traditional ways to express the political and personal concerns of the present - consider the AIDS quilts, banners and textile reactions to 9/11 - the narrative stitch work of the Bayeux and Overlord Embroideries of their day. Textiles are used in the early years of a child as a transitional object when they are learning to see themselves as a separate being from their mother. The familiarity of textile as a 'comfort blanket' means that they have also been used to enable recovery from traumatic events later in life. This conference seeks to encourage artists, practitioners, independent scholars, early career researchers, photographers, academics, performers, and writers, to intermingle and will provide platforms for interdisciplinary interactions that are fruitful and conducive to broadening horizons and sparking future projects, collaborations, and connections. The Problem of Autonomy in Sport Theme One – Sporting Cultures and identities Theme Two – Sport and Health Theme Three – Sports Education Theme Three – Sports Management and Commercialization https://sportandsociety.com/2022-conference/call-for-papers -------- Founded in 2010, the Sport & Society Research Network is brought together around a common interest in cultural, political, and economic relationships of sport to society. We seek to build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across disciplinary, geographic, and cultural boundaries. We are taking on these challenges by offering a blended conference experience, with session types explicitly designed to make the most of both online and in-person social knowledge processes. In conversation with our Research Network Members, we have been reflecting upon the kinds of scholarly conferences we need for our sustainable social futures. Our blended conference experience is delivered on the CGScholar platform – developed by the Common Ground Media Lab, the research and technology arm of Common Ground Research Networks.
