Videogame Cultures

Videogame Cultures
8th Global Meeting

Call for Presentations 2016

Monday 5th September – Wednesday 7th September 2016
Mansfield College, Oxford, United Kingdom

This year’s Videogame Cultures will explore various ways in which videogame culture and genres develop within the framework of five thematic tracks. As the videogame development and videogame cultures are highly complex and variant phenomenon, this often leads to the overlap of the issues across themes, so we are inviting participants of all backgrounds (academic, developer, producer, player, fan etc.) to submit their proposals. The potential participants are encouraged to think broadly within and across thematic tracks; the submissions shall address topics and questions such as (though not limited to) those listed further:

1) Gameplay Ethics:
Principles of Ethical Game Design. Ethics of Experience. Role of Agency. Games as Empowerment. Modes of limited/guided/free choice to act. Ethical Fun.

2) Gender and Gameplay: How are changing the players demographics?
Love (Romance) Sex in Videogames. Socializing and gender inequality (sexual harassment) in the virtual gaming environments.
Case Studies (Gamer Gate; Post-Rapelay Design in Japan; Dead or Alive Xtreme3).

3) Affective Turn in Games Studies:
How is the affective turn reflected in computer game studies and videogame design?
What’s the role of affect and emotion in the experience of play and how computer game design implements emotion (or fails to do so)?

4) Games for Virtual Reality:
Games with meaning. Social Impact Simulations. 2016 has been expected as a year zero in the implementation of virtual reality technology for gaming. HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Sony Playstation VR and other VR hardware is about to hit the market this season, but game developers and experience designers have been developing new forms of gameplay already for many years. How will virtual reality change the principles of current gameplay? What is the future of immersion and embodiment?

5) Gamification/Ludification:
Studying the models of gameplay have become influential trend beyond videogame studies. Playful elements and functional models are built in many applications even in economics or social sciences. We would like to explore how playful elements have changed the interaction between the user and serious applications.

Other topics related to above mentioned areas include:

Videogames and Gaming:
– Theories and Concepts of Gaming. Empowerement.
– Videogames beyond Entertainment, Convergence Culture
– Space of Videogames.
– Multidisciplinary Approaches to Videogame Analysis.

Designer´s Perspective:
– (R)evolutionary Game Design
– How to overcome a dictate of fun
– Music and Sound Design for Games
– Post-mortems

Videogame Cultures:
– Usage Trends and Emerging Practices in Online and Offline Gaming. – Games as Cultural Artefacts.
– Pervasive Gaming.
– Studying Fan Cultures. Stardom of Fanboy. What means Fun.

Subsequently we encourage submission of proposals for short workshops, practitioner-based activities, best practice showcases, how-to sessions, live demonstrations, performances, and pre-formed panels. We particularly welcome short film screenings; photographic essays; installations; interactive talks and alternative presentation styles that encourage engagement.

Further details can be found at our conference website:

We welcome submissions which cross the divide between both project areas. If you would like to be considered for a cross project session, please mark your submission “Crossover Submission”.

What to Send:
300 word abstracts, proposals and other forms of contribution should be submitted by Friday 22nd April 2016. All submissions will be minimally double reviewed, under anonymous (blind) conditions, by a global panel drawn from members of the Project Team and the Advisory Board. ***The 2016 conference theme & streams

The MediAsia2016 conference theme is “Justice”. The media has long been considered a powerful tool for the fighting of injustice and for holding powerful individuals and institutions to account. How do questions of justice interact with those of power, ownership and control, as well as those of (self)censorship? To what extent and where has mainstream media maintained independence and integrity? What is the role of social media? And where is press freedom non-existent or increasingly curtailed? What of the role of investigative journalists, citizen journalists, and whistleblowers?

Film and media, like art and literature, are multi-layered forums for probing the depths of the multifarious concept of “justice.” This can relate to its ethical and moral branches (social, legal, moral justice, etc.) as well as its less tangible embodiments (poetic justice, rough justice, etc.). Fictional films and documentaries frequently celebrate victories of justice and triumphs over adversity in functioning democratic institutions (e.g. Twelve Angry Men), while others explore more fractious moral and ethical dilemmas related to the concept. For instance, can there ever be a moral justification for acting above the law – even committing a serious crime for a “higher purpose”? One might reference Woody Allan’s countless adaptations of Dostoyevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment.

Is a work of fiction or media reporting culpable if it falsifies for a “good cause?” Does justice have a “dark side,” or is this the outcome of it being manipulated? Questions like these have been with us throughout the ages. Do they exist as boundaries for reflection rather than questions to be answered?

Some modern TV series look into justice issues from a legal point of view, but also probe the psychology of many types of people on both sides of the law. What do these contribute to the better understanding of the complexities of human nature and human emotion exposed in them?

We expect this open and enduring theme to excite a number of stimulating research paths, and look forward to their outcomes.

Submissions are organised into the following thematic streams:

-Advertising, Marketing, & Public Relations
-Digital Media and Use of New Technology in Newsgathering
-Communication Theory and Methodology

Sexuality and Social Media

Sexuality and Social Media
A Sexualities Project Meeting
Call for Participation 2016
Friday 23rd September – Sunday 25th September 2016
Mansfield College, Oxford, United Kingdom

How is Social Media affecting our sexual lives? Is technology changing the ways we are having sex? Is the sex we are engaging in thanks to technology fundamentally a different kind of sex? Or is technology simply facilitating access to sex and to the relationship game? Are we having more sex, better or worse sex thanks to Social Media? Are we sexually freer now, and masters of our shared destinies? Does the technology limit in any ways the way we think and do sex, effectively transforming and re-configuring our social relationships? Is the technological medium a simple conduit, or is it a managed apparatus, in which actions and options are shaped for us?

This hub sets out to investigate the ways in which social media is changing sexuality, as it revolutionizes the ways in which we seek and select partners, it shapes the types of encounters we engage in, and re-writes our scripts for erotic action. There has been a massive explosion of social media, dating platforms and mobile dating and hookup apps in the last ten years. A lot has been said about how this is revolutionizing our sex lives. Some think these new technologies are positive and see them as catalysts for sexual liberation. They can maximize partner choice, streamline and broaden access to the dating game, by connecting like-minded partners from far and disparate milieus; they can also multiply possibilities for desire, beyond heteronormativity and monogamy. Others are woefully pessimistic and warn that we are on the verge of a “dating apocalypse” (Vanity Fair, http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2015/08/tinder-hook-up-culture-end-of-dating).

The term “social media” was first used in 1994 (Bercovici, 2010) but it did not reach wide circulation until about 10 years later, when Web 2.0 platforms made possible user generated content and revolutionized the internet (Baym, 2015). Marwick (2013) argues that this heralded a new online era, one that harnessed corporate investment to people’s desire to connect and share content with one another. If “openness” and the “facilitation of connectivity” have been at the heart of social media since inception, so has profit: Baym (2015) reminds us that social media platforms have been primarily funded by a small groups of young males, funded by venture capitalists, who may wish to improve our ability to relate to one another but fundamentally are interested in making money first. She states: “’social media’ is the takeover of the social by the corporate. ‘Social media’ happened when companies figured out how to harness what people were already doing, make (some of) it a bit easier, call it ‘content,’ and funnel our practices into their revenue streams” (Baym 2015, 1).

How does access shape the ways in which technology mediates our sexuality? And in what ways does access limit our knowledge and power? If we think that the majority of platforms rely on algorithms that filter access to material and influence content sharing, then we must ponder the fact that users may not be in control of the information made available to them. Users may be easily managed, having been given the impression of “openness” and “sharing”, when in fact they do not “see” the filters and algorithms that have been applied, and are unable to control them. Most importantly, they are not made aware of the interests of those who have created them. Baym points out that “platforms have take-it-or-leave-it terms of service that nearly always overreach. In times of massive surveillance, we never know where our data will end up, used by whom for what purposes.” (2015, 1-2).

This conference has a global focus; it aims to facilitate dialogue and spark innovative collaborations and discussions at the international level. We welcome papers from all disciplines, professions and vocations, going beyond the academic world and bringing together researchers, community activists and professionals engaged in work on Social Media and sexuality. From the academic sector, we seek representation of the many disciplines that work in the area of Social Media in relationship with sexuality: Mass Communication, Social Policy, the Humanities, the Social Sciences, Health Science, Community Development, etc. We welcome traditional papers, panels and workshop proposals, as well as other forms of presentation platforms (posters, video submissions, etc.) favoured outside academia, given that the conference aims to bring together academics, activists and other professionals, recognising that different groups express themselves in various formats and mediums. We seek submissions on any of the following themes:

Theorizing Social Media and sexuality
Social Media, eroticism and sexual fun
The desirable body on Social Media
Social Media and sexual content – sexuality, media authorship and media production
Sex Work and Social Media – is on-line sexual commerce booming, are we experiencing a rise in escort agencies?
Sexuality and affect – how did that hookup really feel? Empowerment/disempowerment narratives, ghosting
Enforcing the normative on Social Media – “slut shaming” and other forms of denigration
Multiple desires and pansexuality in the app world: does the proliferation of apps like Her, Thrust and 3ndr actually translate into sexual inclusivity?
Discrimination on social media – “lessons” from Grindr: “No blacks, no femmes, no fatties, no Asians.”
Social Media for dating and marriage, but not for sexuality – for example, Muslim dating platforms (like InchAllah.com ), where dirty talk and sex are not part of the interaction;
Managing risk – fake profiles, bad dates, the dangers of “proximity dating”, revenge porn, the AshleyMadison.com scandal, Snapchat and safeguarding sexual history and anonymity on line; risk management tactics; the ‘lurking predator’ and other moral panics (why you shouldn’t post pictures of your children on social media) ; Social Media scandals and the demise of public figures and politicians;
Unplugging by plugging in – the deleterious effects of our social media habits on our currently lived intimate relationships
Stratification by attractiveness and desirability – are the “few” are having all the sex?
Gender wars and the double standard – are hookup apps leveling the playing field? Or do men still have the power to decide the level of relationship (“hit-it-and-leave-it” vs. “relationship material”); intimacy issues: are hookup apps “destroying” intimacy?
Social Media, sexual wellness and health; sex education and mobile apps;
Teens, Social media and Sexuality – sexting, the criminal distribution of the naked selfie as child pornography, prosecution cases, alternatives to prosecution; ref to fandom, tv soaps and online forums; codes and neologisms (“Netflix and chill”)

Sexual Performance measurements Apps – “Am I normal or above average?”

The Superhero

The Superhero
The Superhero Project: 2nd Global Meeting

Call for Presentations 2016

Friday 9th September – Sunday 11th September 2016
Mansfield College, Oxford, United Kingdom

“With great power, comes great irresponsibility...” – Deadpool

In the twenty-first century, the Superhero now holds an unparalleled position within pop culture. Having vastly expanded beyond its birth medium of comic books to what is a fierce and pervasive presence in multiple media, this domination is no more apparent than the realms of mainstream cinema, where blockbuster superhero films routinely break box-office records and more than thirty further films are set to be released by 2020.

In 2016, DC Comics trinity of flagship characters – Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman – finally appear on screen together for the first time in Zack Snyder’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”, while the steadfast heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will fracture in “Captain America: Civil War” and the group villainy of “Suicide Squad” will see anti-heroism placed front and centre. The surprise success of “Deadpool” has ignited a renewed appetite for “R-rated” superhero material and, on TV, the richly-noir “Jessica Jones” merges the superhero with urban sleuth, exploring such dark topics as Rape and PTSD, and “Marvel’s Daredevil” has provided a platform for the discussion of disability issues.

Meanwhile, real individuals are being elevated to the status of superhero – literally and metaphorically. The “Real Life Superhero” phenomenon – in which people dress in superhero costume to enact community service or vigilantism – continues apace, while the military maintains the development of technology that allows soldiers to considerably augment their physical strength. In the halls of comic conventions worldwide, fans demonstrate their devotion to specific iterations of superhero characters via detailed cosplay.

After seventy-eight years of comic book existence, the superhero remains regarded as an inspirational figure, but also a divisive one, perceived in some quarters as a promoter of violence and vigilantism. Superheroes position themselves as purveyors of a specific set of moral values, sometimes above the law, but always striving for the greater good. Superheroes are typically depicted in a constant struggle with notions of personal responsibility, and questions of identity and destiny, in line with Joseph Campbell’s “Monomyth”.

Perceived as a modern form of mythology or folklore, the superhero currently occupies a diverse and expansive space in modern popular culture. Yet, while still largely American in focus, the superhero has become increasingly international, capable of reflecting specific issues and operating as a powerful messenger of them – a power they have possessed since their inception in the spring of 1938. As more and more people wear the symbols of superheroes (via t-shirts etc.) as an expression of values as well as fandom, the superhero is becoming us.

The 2nd Global Conference on Superheroes invites interdisciplinary discussion on superheroes and the notion of the super-heroic. Areas of discussion could include:

Indicative themes for discussion may include but are not limited to:

The postmodern superhero
Secret identities, transformation / becoming
The queering of the superhero genre
The intellectualisation of superhero narratives
Revisionism
Regulation, Moral Relativity and Authority
Superheroes at home
Superhero utopias and dystopias.
Monstrosity
Globalisation and Cultural Appropriation
The superhero’s role in war and conflict
The superhero in childhood play
Cosplay
Gadgetry and cyborg prosthetics

In addition to the presentation of conference papers, the Project Team welcomes the submission of shorts workshops and accounts of professional practice, as well as other contributions, including performances. It particularly welcomes the submission of pre-formed panel proposals.

Further details and information can be found at the conference website:

Call for Cross-Over Presentations
