Migrations: 4th Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Migrations
4th Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Sunday 10th July - Monday 11th July 2022
Athens, Greece

Although COVID-19 has disrupted all forms of human mobility, including the closing of borders, and the halting of travel worldwide, according to the UN International Migration 2020 Highlights, growth in the number of international migrants has been robust over the last two decades, reaching 281 million people living outside their country of origin in 2020, up from 173 million in 2000 and 221 million in 2010. According to the IOM, before the COVID-19 pandemic, international migrants, who made up 3.5 percent of the world's population in 2019, contributed nearly 10 per cent of global GDP (roughly $ 6.7 trillion to global GDP). Moreover, according to the UNHCR, the persistence of extreme poverty in large areas of the world, the impacts of climate change, the continuation of internal conflicts, regional wars, and religious or sectarian inspired violence have forcibly displaced a record number of over 82.4 million people worldwide. At the same time, receiving and transit states keep closing their borders, forcing economic migrants and refugees to look for new routes and ways in search of a better life or a safe haven. Governments are struggling to balance their immigration and asylum policies between their obligations to uphold the fundamental human rights of migrants and the growing domestic pressures of xenophobic sentiments and nativist attitudes, including the increase in "white supremacist", "far-right" or "extreme right-wing" groups around the world.

One thing is certain: international migrations will continue to increase and reshape the world as we know it. The way governments and societies decide to deal with the causes of migrations and their social, economic and political impacts will open new debates on redefining the existing international human rights instruments to protect the most vulnerable of our humanity.

Key Topics
Our fourth interdisciplinary Migrations conference seeks to build on the success of past events and forge a lasting network of professionals in all fields related to this topic. We aim to discuss and explore the main issues, pressing matters, and recent developments in this field of research and practice, to identify areas to be subsequently explored in further depth, and to generate collaborative action that will lead to real, lasting change in the way migration and migrants are perceived and approached in institutional and informal settings.

Some of the suggested issues to be approached include (but are not limited to):

The impacts of Covid-19 on Migration
Covid-19 impacted the flow of regular migration, causing severe economic and social effects. However, remittances remained high. These impacts are still being measured, and it is of much interest to explore the methodologies and results from such studies. Added to the former, states closed borders causing refugees, and economic and survival migrants to look for more dangerous routes or remain stranded at borders in unbearable conditions. Covid-19 also made the work of those who assist refugees or those in a protracted situation very challenging, causing more profound humanitarian crises in refugee camps or transit routes.

Defining and Measuring Migration
Identifying past, present, and new push-and-pull factors for migration, analyzing trends in migration, understanding the political economies of migration, defining categories of migration and migrants, presenting relevant data and instruments in migration studies.

The Current Refugee Crises
Refugee situations, struggles, profiles, stories, efforts at integration, international responses, conditions in refugee camps, requirements for receiving asylum, policies, best practices, international responsibilities, human rights issues, media coverage.

Policy and politics
Migration policy trends in Western societies and worldwide, impacts and effectiveness of existing policies, the resurgence of xenophobia and nativism, centralized vs. decentralized policies, "immigration federalism," geopolitical ramifications of national and international migration policies.

Legal and Political Aspects of Migration
Legal vs. illegal immigration, the criminalization and securitization of migration, national and international migration laws, legal provisions for crossing borders, obtaining residency or asylum, migrants' rights in theory and practice, legal status of EU citizens in the post-Brexit UK, legality of US travel bans, new and old barriers to migration.

Smuggling and Human Trafficking
Definitions, international, regional, and domestic instruments combating smuggling and human trafficking, the political economies of human trafficking.

Climate Change and Migration
Natural disasters and forced migration, the need for regional and international regimes dealing with those forced to migrate as a result of climate change

Local Responses to Migration
Attitudes towards refugees and economic migrants, social and political movements, debates and controversies based on immigration/emigration related issues, exclusion vs. inclusion, "sanctuary" policies, compassionate migration.

Global and Local Implications of Migration
Social, political, demographic, and economic impacts for sending and receiving countries, for the migrants themselves, and their host communities.

Sex, Gender and Sexual Orientation
The significance of these factors in the experience of the migrant. How is migration (regular and irregular) experienced by women, trans and non-binary individuals, and those identifying as queer during their migration journeys, resettlement, and integration process?

Narratives of Displacement
Migration stories, folklore, art, community building.

Migration and the Media
Depiction of refugees, migrants and migration in the media, the role of social media and new technologies in facilitating migration and maintaining transnational migrant networks, the role of the press in creating the "other" and increasing/defusing social tension between migrants and locals.

Looking into the Future
Scenarios for future trends in migration challenges for the future generations of today's migrants, future challenges for the sending and receiving countries.

Professing in the Field of Migration
Issues, hardships, frustrations, communication needs, big and small victories and bright, hopeful moments of professionals working towards the integration and aid of refugees or migrants in general, studying migration and migrants, drafting or applying migration policies or legislation.

What's so Special ABout a Progressive Connexions Event?
A fresh, friendly, dynamic format - at Progressive Connexions we are dedicated to breaking away from the stuffy, old-fashion conference formats, where endless presentations are read aloud off PowerPoints. We work to bring you an interactive format, where exchange of experience and information is alternated with captivating workshops, engaging debates and round tables, time set aside for getting to know each other and for discussing common future projects and initiatives, all in a warm, relaxed, egalitarian atmosphere.

A chance to network with international professionals - the beauty of our interdisciplinary events is that they bring together professionals from all over the world and from various fields of activity, all joined together by a shared passion. Not only will the exchange of experience, knowledge and stories be extremely valuable in itself, but we seek to create lasting, ever-growing communities around our projects, which will become a valuable resource for those belonging to them.

A chance to be part of constructing change - There is only one thing we love as much as promoting knowledge: promoting real, lasting social change by encouraging our participants to take collective action, under whichever form is most suited to their needs and expertise (policy proposals, measuring instruments, research projects, educational materials, etc.) We will support all such actions in the aftermath of the event as well, providing a platform for further discussions, advice from the experts on our Project Advisory Team and various other tools and intellectual resources, as needed.

An opportunity to discuss things that matter to you - Our events are not only about discussing how things work in the respective field, but also about how people work in that field - what are the struggles, problems and solutions professionals have found in their line of work, what are the areas where better communication among specialists is needed and how the interdisciplinary approach can help bridge those gaps and help provide answers to questions from specific areas of activity.

An unforgettable experience - When participating in a Progressive Connexions event, there is a good chance you will make some long-time friends. Our group sizes are intimate, our venues are comfortable and relaxing and our event locations are suited to the history and culture of the event.

Testimony: Memory, Trauma, Truth, Engagement - 3rd Global Interdisciplinary Conference

Testimony: Memory, Trauma, Truth, Engagement
3rd Global Interdisciplinary Conference

Friday 8th July 2022 - Saturday 9th July 2022
Athens, Greece

The increased visibility of police brutality, forced disappearances, discoveries of unmarked and mass graves, and gendered killings, among other manifestations of systematic violence compels us to grapple with stories of loss, grief, and mourning. To give testimony, to tell and retell what one has witnessed, across time and generations - an historical inheritance of memory, trauma, and engagement. These accounts often take the form of testimony, that is, autobiographical narratives that present evidence of first-person accounts of human rights abuses, violence and war, and life under conditions of social oppression.

Testimony strongly encourages us to rethink the concepts of memory and trauma, closure, grieving and mourning, and to (re)imagine the entanglement of past, present, and future by opening a space for voices that have been historically silenced and/or censored. It is a genre that continues to thrive in the twenty-first century - perhaps even more so since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic - and one that encompasses a diversity of expression or representation from oral to written as well as nonfictional to fictional.

Testimonial production implies a spectrum of disciplines, art forms, geographical and historical contexts as well as multi-lingual realities, that includes topics such as: human rights and storytelling; trauma and memory; ethics, witnessing, and reconciliation; affect theory and empathy studies; critical pedagogy. Scholars continue to engage questions that address issues of generic hybridity and metamorphosis; uses, reception, and production of testimony; ethical and aesthetic contexts of testimony; and legal and juridical frameworks of testimony.

It is through interdisciplinarity that an examination can be made of the impact and contributions of testimonial production within the cultures of redress and transnational justice processes for both the producers of testimony and their audience.

The third conference in the Testimony series marks the launch of a new five year Special Collaborative Project.

Key Topics
This call for proposals asks for proposals in the context of a global pandemic, war, rape, and State crimes, and drawing on the concepts of memory, trauma, truth, and engagement. This conference aims to examine the genres and contexts of testimonial production that considers testimony in terms of its trajectories into questions dealing with memory, trauma, truth, and/or witness engagement. Examples of the above can be seen in, but are not exclusive to, the following categories:

Genre and Production
~ Literary and filmic witnessing: documentaries, witness testimonies
~ Life writing genres (autobiography, memoirs, letters, ethnography, etc.)
~ Testimonial writing: fiction vs. non-fiction, official history vs. reality
~ Social media: Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, Snapchat, Tik Tok, vlogs, blogs
~ Street Art: urban interventions, performance, activism, monuments, and anti-monuments
~ Digital storytelling: multimodal stories, podcasts

Trauma and Memory
~ Historical memory: spectral spaces, haunted geographies, memorialisation
~ Collective memory: oral history, culture of acknowledgement
~ Healing and recovery: survivor groups, support groups, activist groups, public mourning
~ Official history; cultures of erasure
~ Intergenerational trauma, storytelling

Truth and Reconciliation
~ Cultures of redress: personal, collective
~ Political persecution and torture
~ Challenges of truth and reconciliation commissions
~ Juridical testimony

Pedagogy and Civic Engagement
~ Culture of acknowledgement
~ Human rights and social justice: social activism and awareness
~ Methodologies and pedagogies of testimony

9th International Symposium on Creativity for Sustainable Education

9th International Symposium on Creativity for Sustainable Education
19th to 22nd April 2022
Jyväskylä, Finland

Main theme: How creativity plays an important role in designing new tools for sustainable education. Special call: Mathematics and Science Learning for Sustainable Development in Multidisciplinary Context Papers, Creative classroom, Socratic dialogue.

For over a decade, the Council for Creative Education has been celebrating the World Creativity and Innovation Day in April. UNESCO has declared April 21st as the World Creativity and Innovation Day followed by World Earth Day on April 22.

Commemorating these 2 special days - CCE Finland is now ready to welcome researchers and educators around the world for its 9th Symposium on Creative Education focusing on 'Creativity for Sustainable Education'.

For UNESCO, education for sustainable development involves: Integrating key sustainable development issues into teaching and learning. This may include, for example, instruction about climate change, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity, and poverty reduction and sustainable consumption. It also requires participatory teaching and learning methods that motivate and empower learners to change their behaviors and take action for sustainable development. ESD consequently promotes competencies like critical thinking, imagining future scenarios and making decisions in a collaborative way.

Through this symposium, CCE Finland aims to provide a common global forum to esteemed researchers and educators to present their research/innovation on how creativity plays an important role in designing new tools for sustainable development. 9th Symposium promises insights on key methodology, real-time classroom implementation and some meaningful debates and discussion.

Textures of Emotions: Storytelling and Textiles - A Global Conference

Textures of Emotions: Storytelling and Textiles
A Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Friday 8th July - Saturday 9th July 2022
Athens, Greece

Textiles surround us in our everyday lives. From the clothes we wear to cover our bodies and communicate who we are (or who we would like to be), to household linens and domestic fabrics with which we dress our homes. Textiles are everywhere and hold the memory of our existence. Ubiquitous, they are often undervalued and unseen but under certain circumstances they become totemic, charged with emotion, potent with meaning and powerful in holding memory.

Textiles can be used to convey a political message though use as protest banners or flags - fought over, burned, claimed and reclaimed by different factions. Choices of clothing are used to foster ideas of identity and difference, expression of non-normative behaviours, bonding and tribalism as well as providing a way to provoke discussion, attitude and confrontation. They can also be used in more violent ways as gags, blindfolds, masks or as constrictive garments - corsets and foot bindings.

Textiles have been used in traditional ways to express the political and personal concerns of the present - consider the AIDS quilts, banners and textile reactions to 9/11 - the narrative stitch work of the Bayeux and Overlord Embroideries of their day. Textiles are used in the early years of a child as a transitional object when they are learning to see themselves as a separate being from their mother. The familiarity of textile as a 'comfort blanket' means that they have also been used to enable recovery from traumatic events later in life.

This conference seeks to encourage artists, practitioners, independent scholars, early career researchers, photographers, academics, performers, and writers, to intermingle and will provide platforms for interdisciplinary interactions that are fruitful and conducive to broadening horizons and sparking future projects, collaborations, and connections.

Key Topics
We would welcome proposals for presentations including verbal, performative, workshops or exhibit - on any aspect of textile thinking, emotion and storytelling including but not limited to:

~ Narrative textiles - contemporary and traditional
~ Clothing and gender identity
~ Cloth and the body, erotic cloth
~ Emotional textiles
~ The role of textiles in recovery from trauma
~ Psychological importance of garments
~ Activism and subversion
~ Meditation and Spirituality
~ Fine Art
~ The use of textiles as protest
~ The use of cloth as metaphor in literature
~ Textiles in film, television and performance
~ Traditional textiles and historical storytelling

Fashion and Photography: 2nd Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Fashion and Photography
2nd Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference

Friday 8th July - Saturday 9th July 2022
Athens, Greece

In the early 20th century, fashion and photography were indelibly wedded through the efforts of a number of photographers, fashion designers, and magazine publishers. Once these cultural power shapers created the form, fashion photography took on a life of its own and became - perhaps always was - art. This art form has since been elevated to heights such that being a fashion photographer can be seen as a very important chapter in many well-known photographers' career: designers rely on them; models request them; magazines use their work: celebrities choose them for shoots; and the power they have to represent others is beyond compare in today's, 21st century image-driven world.
Following our first Fashion and Photography conference in Palermo in 2018, we are further broadening the interdisciplinary mix and range of potential discussions and activities. Whether dance, theatre, drama theory, directing or performance practice, the different aspects of the performing arts will be explored and developed alongside previous discussions, especially with the new challenges of technology along with the changes in audiences and performers in the 21st century.

Our Fashion and Photography: 2nd Global Inclusive Interdisciplinary event will examine the dynamics of all these (and related) fields. In a world which is experiencing the transforming realities of globalization, with people engaging at all levels and in diverse ways, the intersections and engagements created at the interface of all the modes of representation involved in these areas and activities are paramount. They involve cultural, social, commercial, artistic, financial, and political issues, and from the bottom to the top can determine power relations, careers, sexual norms and deviance, and more.

We live in a period of so-called hyper-consumption which encourages individuals to consume for their own personal pleasure. Fast fashion, trends in sustainable and recyclable fashion, the rise of performance fashion and fashion as performance art denotes a society now defined by movement, fluidity, and flexibility. Performance from ballet to theatre, the catwalk to festivals, is increasingly oriented towards pleasure and satisfaction, a fleeting hedonism which quickly changes focus. The experience is mixed with tensions, conflicts, and even anxiety. The uncertainties and fears of 21st century living are reflected in fashion, performance and all forms of visual representations.

This conference aims to consider ways in which we can re-imagine our practices in relation to others, our history, and the environment with a view to forming a selective innovative interdisciplinary publication to engender further collaboration and discussion, whilst also continuing the evolution of the project.

Unlike other conferences or gatherings, our event proposes to step outside the traditional conference setting and offer opportunities for photographers, designers, practitioners, theorists, independent scholars, academics, performers, writers, and others to intermingle, providing platforms for interdisciplinary interactions that are fruitful and conducive to broadening horizons and sparking future projects, collaborations, and connections.

We are excited to accept proposals for presentations, displays, exhibits, round tables, panels, interactive workshops and more. Below is a non-exhaustive list of possible approaches, all of them residing at the point of connection between Fashion and Photography.

And more. If you don’t see something here that you think belongs, please drop us a line! We are happy to entertain other ideas that examine the rich, generative, and exciting space that these two fields of power and art create.

Our main goal is to facilitate dialogue and spark innovative collaborations and discussions at an international level, in a dynamic and interactive setting. Thus, we welcome participants from all relevant disciplines, professions and vocations (NGO personnel, aid workers, researchers, mental and physical health professionals, educators, human rights activists, counsellors, social workers, policy makers, journalists, lawyers, politicians, business owners, military personnel, photographers, designers, editors, journalists, customs workers and members of the border patrol, labour specialists, historians, sociologists, psychologists, economists, anthropologists, ethnographers social media experts, artists and many more).

Ethos
Progressive Connexions believes it is a mark of personal courtesy and professional respect to your colleagues that all delegates should attend for the full duration of the meeting. If you are unable to make this commitment, please do not submit an abstract or proposal for presentation.

Please note: Progressive Connexions is a not-for-profit network and we are not in a position to be able to assist with conference travel or subsistence, nor can we offer discounts off published rates and fees.

Please send all enquiries to the project email: athensfashion@progressiveconnexions.net
