***EuroMedia2017 Conference Theme: "History, Story, Narrative"

Historians are far from the only interested party in writing history. In a sense it is an interest we all share – whether we are talking politics, region, family birthright, or even personal experience. We are spectators to the process of history while being intimately situated within its impact and formations.

How, then, best to write it? Is it always the victor's version? Have we not begun increasingly to write "history from below", that lived by those who are not at the top of the power hierarchy? Are accounts of history always gender-inflected, hitherto, at least, towards men rather than women? Who gets to tell history if the issue is colonialism or class? How does geography, the power of place, intersect with history? What is the status of the personal story or narrative within the larger frame of events?

This conference addresses issues of writing history from literary and other discursive perspectives. That is to say: novels, plays, poems, autobiographies, memoirs, diaries, travel logs and a variety of styles of essay. One thinks of Shakespeare's history plays, Tolstoy's War and Peace, Shi Nai'an's The Water Margin, Balzac's La Comédie Humaine. It also addresses oral history, the spoken account or witness, the Hiroshima survivor to the modern Syrian migrant.

Which also connects to the nexus of media and history. The great "historical" films continue to hold us, be it Eisenstein's October: Ten Days That Shook the World (1925) or Gone with the Wind (1940). We live in an age of documentaries, whether film or TV. There is a view that we also inhabit "instant" history, the download to laptop, the app, the all-purpose mobile. How has this technology changed our perception, our lived experience, of history? What is the role of commemoration, parade, holiday, festival or statuary in the writing of history?

The different modes by which we see and understand history, flow and counter-flow, nevertheless come back to certain basics.

One asks whether we deceive ourselves in always asking for some grand narrative. Can there only be one narrator or is history by necessity a colloquium, contested ground? Is national history a myth? And history-writing itself: is it actually a form of fiction, an artifice which flatters to deceive? What, exactly, is a historical fact?

This conference, we hope, will address these perspectives and others that connect and arise.

For the fourth year, The European Conference on Media, Communication and Film will be held alongside The European Conference on Arts and Humanities. Registration for either of these conferences will allow participants to attend sessions in the other.

In conjunction with our global partners, we look forward to extending a warm welcome to you in 2017.

**Featured Panel Presentation: The Challenges of Doing Research and Creative Activity in the Arts and Humanities Today
Professor Donald E. Hall and Professor Anne Boddington

Given the rise of anti-intellectualism and increasing emphasis on technical and skills-based education, 2017 and beyond will prove particularly challenging times for those of us working in the arts and humanities. Our panellists will each speak for five to ten minutes about the broad political constraints on their work, as well as their respective national and institutional contexts of funding and prioritisation. This will be followed by a general discussion with the audience about collective experiences and strategies for individual and collective response to the challenges that we face.

Further programming will be announced in the coming weeks and months.

***ECSS2017 Conference Theme: "East Meets West: Innovation and Discovery"

From natural phenomena and the results of climate change, through pollution and societal traumas, migrations and war, the enormous challenges that face humankind and our environment are frequently daunting and difficult to comprehend. However, with every new challenge or disruption comes the opportunity for innovation and discovery. Whether inventing new technologies, implementing innovative systems, enacting better policies, legislation, or governance, or ensuring greater cooperation and information sharing, responses are many and varied.

From incremental shift to radical change, from local to regional, or from the national to the global, this international conference will focus on the challenges that demand a collective response. It will highlight the need to harness our abilities as scientists, policymakers, practitioners, engineers and educators, to find multidisciplinary solutions in pursuit of the common goal of a sustainable world.

In conjunction with our global partners, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in 2017.

***Programme

**Featured Panel: Brexit: The (dis)United Kingdom and the European (dis)Union
Chair: Dr Joseph Haldane, IAFOR

On June 23, 2016, the United Kingdom voted to exit the European Union in a referendum that saw 52 percent of the population come out in favour of leaving and 48 percent in favour of remaining. While both England and Wales voted to leave, Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to stay. This division and the closeness of the referendum result led to a political class and government that was overwhelmingly for continued membership of the European Union, bound to follow a path it did not support, along with an anxious and divided population. In continental Europe, the "ever closer union" enshrined in the EU's treaties appeared under threat from of the imminent withdrawal of one of the "big three".

This panel will examine the situation in Britain and Europe one year on. Was the UK's vote the first sign of the Union unravelling, with some commentators suggesting that Brexit would lead to the break up of both the EU and the UK, or have forces emerged to counter those of the resurgent nationalisms and populisms? The panellists will discuss the UK's economic and political outlook and, in reference to the conference theme, will question whether these altering forces are not disruptive innovation that could see both the UK and the EU undergo necessary change, emerging stronger for it.

**Featured Panel: East Meets West - Healthy, Active and Beautiful Aging in Europe
Chairs: Dr Evangelia G. Chrysikou & Professor Chariklia Tziraki

How any society deals with aging can be a contentious issue, one on which questions of culture, convenience and even expedience are brought to bear. Economic prosperity and peace in developed countries has lead to unprecedented levels of healthcare provision for a population that, as a result, is living far longer. Coupled with falling birthrates, Western Europe and Japan are witnessing demographic changes that bring unparalleled challenges but also unexpected opportunities for aging populations, as innovations and discoveries help people lead active and healthy lives.

This panel will provide an overview of the demographic situation in different countries and cultures in Europe and beyond to compare and contrast outlooks for the aged. It will also examine the concepts of healthy, active and beautiful aging.

*A complementary panel will be held on the same theme at the Asian Conference Series 2017 in Kobe, Japan.

**Further programming for The European Conference on the Social Sciences 2017 will be announced in the coming months.
