Sci-Fi / The Sci-Fi Project

Sci-Fi
The Sci-Fi Project

Wednesday 5th August - Friday 7th August 2015
Mansfield College, Oxford, United Kingdom

Call for Presentations:
From the 10th century's The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, to 19th century classics like War of the Worlds, to the universe of superheroes that populated comic books of the 20th century, to post-war television series like Star Trek TOS, to contemporary multi-media franchises including the Harry Potter series, The Hunger Games series and the A Song of Ice and Fire series, science fiction and fantasy have been a cornerstone of culture. The enduring popularity of these genres as a source of entertainment among the general public and an object of academic scrutiny raises important questions about the significance and meanings of these types of narratives.

Films, television shows, short stories, novels, magazines, blogs and even university courses have become the terrain on which creative practitioners, scholars and laypeople engage with science fiction and fantasy. This dynamic interaction has produced an ongoing interest in questions about how these stories help us to navigate the world we live in; and whether or not utopias and dystopias can tell us anything about the world we inhabit - or how to interpret it. Because the worlds of science fiction and fantasy are the products of dreams and imagination, the ways in which they imagine the world and our place in it, including social structures and issues of race, gender, class and sexual orientation, acquire significant political, social and ideological implications worthy of closer consideration.

This conference will explore how our present culture influences and is influenced by the fantastic elements we encounter in media such as books, movies, TV shows, plays, fan events, graphic novels, digital art and games. While including popular mass media, such as Hollywood blockbusters, we are also interested in niche and subcultural sci-fi products, such a multi user dungeons and vidding. We therefore welcome participants from all disciplines and fields, including but not limited to creative practitioners, fans, researchers, skilled professionals including teachers and clinicians who use sci-fi/fantasy creation/role playing in instructional or therapeutic contexts, tradespeople, representatives from the voluntary sector, and anyone with an interest in joining the inter-disciplinary dialogue. We hope that this conference will help others to learn more about this genre and its importance to global understanding of ourselves and others. By exploring the multitude of societies featured in the science fiction and fantasy world, this conference aims to foster greater understanding of these genres in their own right, heighten awareness of the genres' implications for global and personal issues and inspire insights which can be used to pursue positive change and innovation in our own societies.

We invite the submission of proposals for presentations, panels, workshops, readings, performances, installations, screenings and round table discussions on any topic related to science fiction and fantasy. These include, but are not limited to:

The 2015 conference theme is "Power"

Power as a commodity has challenged the minds of social scientists and philosophers while its exercise has always fascinated historians. From classical thinkers' works such as Aristotle's Politka or Machiavelli's Il Principe through modern figures who manipulate power in the media, like Silvio Berlusconi or Rupert Murdoch, to the vast networks that support major heads of state, power has been a necessity to some or like an aphrodisiac to others. The dynamics of power and its associations with wealth and status now shape the contemporary world more visibly than ever. It is a research challenge to all fields of the social sciences to offer some explanation of its magnetism and its mechanisms. We expect this theme to excite a number of stimulating research paths, and look forward to their outcomes as we gather in Brighton in 2015.

The organizers encourage submissions that approach this theme from a variety of perspectives. However, the submission of other topics for consideration is welcome and we also encourage sessions within and across a variety of inter/disciplinary and theoretical perspectives. Submissions are organized into the following thematic streams:

- Anthropology, Archaeology, Cultural Studies and Humanities
- Cognitive and Behavioral Sciences
- Computational Social Science
- Cultural and Media Studies
- Economics and Management
- Education and Social Welfare
- Demography, Human Geography and Population Studies
- Ethnicity, Difference, and Identity
- Globalization and Internationalization
- Immigration, Refugees, Race, and Nation
- Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Gender
- International Relations and Human Rights
- Journalism and Communications
- Linguistics
- Natural, Environmental and Health Sciences
- Politics, Philosophy, Ethics, and Consciousness
- Politics, Public Policy, Law and Criminology
- Psychology and Social Psychology
- Research Methodologies, Quantitative and Qualitative
- Social History
- Social Work
- Sociology

Gender and Cyberspace / Special Conference Stream within The Femininities and Masculinities Project

Gender and Cyberspace
Special Conference Stream within The Femininities and Masculinities Project

Saturday 2nd May - Monday 4th May 2015
Dubrovnik, Croatia

Call for Presentations:
Is there gender in Cyberspace and is so do we get to choose which one, if any, we are? Whilst physical reality would seem to choose who and what we are for us, virtual reality would seem to allow us to be who and what we want whenever we want but is this in fact the case? What are the choices we are actually allowed and how do they impact on the world beyond cyberspace? If our gender and sexuality can be constructed online who does this relate to that which we have offline and how do the two, or more, interact? Social media, dating sites, chatrooms, blogs, porn sites, and other cyberpaces are as much the platforms to perform and create our identities in as the everyday "real" world is and this meeting will discuss the ways that might work and what it might say about our post-human, or post-gender future.

As a special stream within "Femininities, Masculinities and the Posthuman" conference, we would like to invite presentations on the following topics:

- Performing genders and fashioning identities in the cyberspace
- What are the ramifications of virtual and "real" identities interacting?
- Cyber-relationships: online dating, cybersex, online communications
- Media addiction and gender
- Sexual addiction and the media
- Internet pornography
- Non-normative sexualities in the cyberspace
- Cyber-violence and gender
- Feminisms and the political power of the Internet
- Representations of normative and non-normative femininities and masculinities on the Internet
- Is the above actually indicative of a post-human future or just a greater degree of "allowance" within heteronormative society?
- Is a post-gender society possible and, if so, how and what would it look like?

Proposed papers, presentations, workshops and pre-formed panels on issues related to any of the above themes, but by no means limited to them, are welcome in a variety of academic and creative forms. We would like to embrace scientific, theoretical, philosophical, historical or sociological examinations of those themes, as well as in other fields of scholarship and discussions of their representations in literature, film, visual art, music, media, and other aspects of culture. We would like to invite scholars and scientists as well as artists, activists and professionals from a variety of fields.

What to Send:
300 word proposals should be submitted by Friday 13th March 2015. All submissions are at least double blind peer reviewed. Proposals should be submitted simultaneously to the Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word or RTF formats with the following information and in this order:
