NINTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE ARTS IN SOCIETY Rome, Italy Sapienza University of Rome 25-27 June 2014 Dear Delegate, On behalf of the Organizing Committee and the International Advisory Board, we are pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the Ninth International Conference on the Arts in Society and the Call for Submissions to The Arts Journal Collection. The 2014 Arts in Society Conference will be held in Rome, Italy from the 25-27 June at Sapienza University of Rome. Proposals for paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, roundtables, or colloquia are invited to the conference, addressing the arts through one of the following themes: Theme 1: Arts Education Theme 2: Arts Theory and History Theme 3: New Media, Technology, and the Arts Theme 4: Social, Political, and Community Agendas in the Arts Theme 5: The Lives of Art Presenters also have the option to submit completed papers to one of the fully peer-reviewed journals in The Arts Collection. If you are unable to attend the conference, you may still join the community and submit your article for peer review and possible publication, upload an online presentation, and enjoy subscriber access to the journal. Proposals are reviewed on rolling deadlines. The final submission deadline for in-person presentations is 25 May 2014 (title and short abstract). Proposals submitted after this day will be accommodated in non-themed sessions at the conference or are eligible for community membership registrations (no attendance at conference required with community membership presentations). Conference Theme: Borderlands of Becoming, Belonging and Sharing Local, national and global cultures have been transformed by an intensification of human migration, mobility and multi-culture with multiple and complex claims of home, identity and belonging. Gloria Anzaldua's idea of the borderland has become a critical conceptual rubric used by cultural researchers as a way of understanding, explaining and articulating the in-determined, vague, ambiguous nature of everyday life and the cultural politics of border-knowledge, border crossings, transgression, living in-between and multiple belongings. Borderlands is also about a social space where people of diverse backgrounds and identities meet and share a space in which the politics of co-presence and co-existence are experienced and enacted in mundane ways. This conference, which focuses on the borderlands of becoming, belonging and sharing, is therefore about examining how the culture of everyday life is regulated and contested across diverse political, economic and social contexts, and whether and how it creates spaces of belonging with others. The aim of this conference theme is to open up discussion, critical reflection and analysis about emerging social, political and cultural identities that are formed at the intersection of multiple and multi-sited belongings and their expression and about the possibility of making them shared across differences. We welcome papers that focus on (but not limited to): - Trans-cultural displacement/belonging - Belonging and the intersections of gender, race, religion, sexuality - Seeking refuge, unruly belonging(s) and border politics - Trauma and joy of becoming and belonging - Communication, new technologies and belonging - Cultural narratives of belonging/not belonging - Cultural politics of survival/transgression - New imaginings/formations of home - Citizenship beyond borders - Multicultural exhaustion/renewal - Belonging in the Anthropocene - Multiple and complex belongings - Re-locating culture across borders - Convivial cultures and the imagined communities - Creation of shared space(s) of multiple belongings We hope that the 2014 conference theme will encourage academic and personal encounters and exchanges across national, religious, cultural and disciplinary divides. ABOUT THE CONFERENCE CHAIRS: ACLL/ACTC Conference Co-Chair: Professor Steve Cornwell Steve Cornwell is Professor of English and Interdisciplinary Studies at Osaka Jogakuin University, and also teaches in the online portion of the MATESOL program for the New School in New York. He helped write and design several of the New School courses and has been involved with the program since its inception. He is involved with the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT) (an affiliate of IAFOR) severing on its National Board of Directors (Director of Program); his duties involve working with a volunteer team of 50 plus to put on JALT's annual, international conference each fall. Most recently, since 2012 he has been the Committee Chair of Osaka Jogakuin University's Lifelong Learning Committee and is responsible for their evening extension program geared at alumni and community members. He is also the Vice-Chair of Osaka Jogakuin University's English Education Committee which is responsible for suggesting policy regarding English Education and also responsible for developing material for the integrated curriculum. This year he is serving as country coordinator for Teachers Helping Teachers' Bangladesh Team. Teachers Helping Teachers is a special interest group of JALT and has been working closely with the Bangladesh English Language Teaching Association (BELTA) for several years jointly putting on professional development events for English teachers in Bangladesh. An American who has made Osaka his home, Professor Cornwell first became involved with IAFOR as a featured speaker at the first ACE conference in 2009, and has gradually become more involved in the organization, and in his capacity of Local Conference Chair, now assists in the logistical and administrative side of every event. He advises extensively on academic matters too, with particular responsibility for overseeing and developing the programs of the ACLL/ACTC conference in Japan, and the ECLL/ECTC event in the UK. ACLL/ACTC Conference Chair: Professor Barbara Lockee Dr Lockee is Professor of Instructional Design and Technology at Virginia Tech., USA, where she is also Associate Director of the School of Education and Associate Director of Educational Research and Outreach. She teaches courses in instructional design, message design, and distance education. Her research interests focus on instructional design issues related to technology-mediated learning. She has published more than 80 papers in academic journals, conferences and books, and has presented her scholarly work at over 90 national and international conferences. Dr. Lockee is Immediate Past President of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology, an international professional organization for educational technology researchers and practitioners. She earned her Ph.D. in 1996 from Virginia Tech in Curriculum and Instruction (Instructional Technology), M.A. in 1991 from Appalachian State University in Curriculum and Instruction (Educational Media), and B.A. in 1986 from Appalachian State University in Communication Arts.
