2nd Global Conference:Transmedia: Storytelling and Beyond

2nd Global Conference:Transmedia: Storytelling and Beyond

Wednesday 14th May â€" Friday 16th May 2014
Lisbon, Portugal

Call for Presentations:

The Global Research Project on Transmedia was launched in Sydney, Australia in January 2013 with a programme that brought together researchers, educators, industry practitioners and other stakeholders across the professional and disciplinary spectrum. (The programme is available online at http://tinyurl.com/bnysnt4.) Discussions highlighted critical issues concerning techniques for user engagement; research, pedagogy and curriculum design; and evaluative techniques for complex and dynamic user engagement. The conversations highlighted the diversity of transmedia projects and fostered a greater appreciation of the ways in which alternative reality gaming, narrative and non-narrative multiplatform productions and social media projects fall under the transmedia rubric. For our follow up event in Lisbon, Portugal we welcome proposals for presentations, panels and interactive workshops that continue the dialogue by attending to themes that include:

Innovation in Transmedia Design and Production
-Aesthetics and creativity in production designs and trends
-Technologies of platform production
-Social networking trends and their impact on transmedia development
-Narrative development models and the mechanics of transmedia storytelling: emergent forms, formats, practices
-Non-narrative transmedia models
-Case studies

Education
-Research methods for studying transmedia
-Institutional acceptance of transmedia in the curriculum
-Different disciplinary approaches to transmedia
-Teaching transmedia
-Teaching with transmedia
-Training future transmedia producers (i.e. pedagogies for writing, design, platform management)
-Case studies

Transmedia Audiences/Users
-Defining and valuing modes of audience/user engagement: dwell time, sharing, user-generated content, and beyond
-Convergence, fragmentation and participatory culture
-Understanding the relationship between 'producer' and 'user'
-Studies of transmedia audiences, especially in cross-cultural contexts
-Uses and limitations of web analytics

Industry Performance, Funding and Sustainability
-Interdisciplinary approaches to identifying opportunities for a range of project scopes and levels of production from grassroots to global industry (self-funding, crowdfunding, arts organisations, broadcaset, global PR, etc.)
-Transmedia production business models, particularly strategies that take transmedia seriously as performance rather than as marketing offshoot
-Cultural policy as a means of promoting innovation and industry sustainability
-Case studies

The project Steering Group invites proposals for presentations, interactive workshops, screenings, installations, reports on research, and pre-constituted, theme-driven panels. We are particularly interested in breaking the pattern of academic conferences by welcoming non-academic participants, especially industry professionals, and by encouraging non-traditional approaches to presentations.

In order to support and encourage interdisciplinarity engagement, it is our intention to create the possibility of starting dialogues between the parallel events running during this conference. Delegates are welcome to attend up to two sessions in each of the concurrent conferences. We also propose to produce cross-over sessions between two and possibly all three groups â€" and we welcome proposals which deal with the relationship between Cybercultures and/or transmedia narratives, immersive worlds and/or monstrous geographies.

What to send:
300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 6th December 2013 If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should be submitted by Friday 14th March 2014. 300 word abstracts should be submitted simultaneously to both Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word or RTF formats with the following information and in this order:

a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in programme, c) email address, d) title of abstract, e) body of abstract, f) up to 10 keywords.
E-mails should be entitled: TM2 Abstract Submission.

Please use plain text (Times Roman 12) and abstain from using footnotes and any special formatting, characters or emphasis (such as bold, italics or underline). We acknowledge receipt and answer to all paper proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in a week you should assume we did not receive your proposal; it might be lost in cyberspace! We suggest, then, to look for an alternative electronic route or resend.

6th Global Conference: Evil, Women and the Feminine

6th Global Conference: Evil, Women and the Feminine

Friday 2nd May - Sunday 4th May 2014
Lisbon, Portugal

Call for Presentations:

Despite the attempts of feminists the conjunction between evil and the feminine seems unbroken. Established as secondary, derivative and hence inferior, women have been long suspected of being the source of human (though more often masculine) miseries, always in cahoots with the forces of evil and destruction. Paradoxically, at the same time, some have also been put on the pedestal and lauded as ideals of purity and dedication, yet these paragons only proved the rule that, on average, the feminine/woman equals imperfect and transgressive. Mischievous, beguiling, seductive, lascivious, unruly, carping, vengeful and manipulative - these are only a few of the epithets present in cultures and literatures across the world. In grappling with our understanding of what it is to be and do 'evil', the project aims to explore the possible sources of the fear and hatred of women and the feminine as well as their manifestations and pervasiveness across times, cultures and media.

Evil, Women and the Feminine seeks to engage fruitful academic discourse over the core theme of evil and monstrous women, and the variations thereof. Although this type of discourse can lend itself to a feminist theoretical standpoint, the conference does not necessarily align itself as such and welcomes a variety of theoretical and critical approaches, such as - but not limited to - queer studies, post-structural, Marxist, psychoanalytical, anthropological etc.

Among the core themes to be explored at this years conference explored are:

- Murderess', terrorists, child-killers, kidnappers, abusers, serial killers
- Monstrous motherhood in literature and film: monstrous births and infanticide (Beowulf, Alien, Rosemary's Baby, etc.
- Archetypical fears: feminine blood and castration
- Portrayal of Evil Woman in Literature: from Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth to Kessey's Sister Ratched.
- Psychoanalytic perspectives: "Vagina Dentata" etc
- Historical perspectives of female evil
- Women and/in Power: Cleopatra, Messalina, Isabella of Castile, Mary Tudor, Countess Elizabeth Bathory, Lucia Borgia, Eva Peron, etc. Were these women truly evil or did they merely try to survive in a man's world?
- Holocaust and Nazi witches: Irma Grese or the "Bitch of Belsen", Ilse Koch Born, Witch of Buchenwald and others;
- Evil women in the visual arts
- Cultural and racial stereotypes
- Mythological icons: Medusa, Jezebel, Delilah, Lilith, Harpies, Sirens, Hel, Eris
- Female revenge: women who took revenge on their unfaithful husbands or ungrateful children. From mythology to real life: Kriemhield, Medea, Clytemnestra, Katherine Knight, Maria Savez, etc.
- Evil females in children's books and cartoons. Step-mothers are supposed to be the most evil women in the world of fairy-tales and Disney cartoons but is this really so?
- Ethical studies
- Beauty as threatening or evil: from the times of witch-hunts female beauty was considered dangerous. Do we still feel threatened by a female beauty?
- Fantasy: evil women in strips and video games;
- Folklore: female Vampires, witches, witch-hunts, pact with a devil
- Evil Women in/and Religion: Dark Goddesses and Counter-Readings

The Steering Group particularly welcomes the submission of pre-formed panel proposals. Papers will also be considered on any related theme.

In order to support and encourage interdisciplinarity engagement, it is our intention to create the possibility of starting dialogues between the parallel events running during this conference. Delegates are welcome to attend up to two sessions in each of the concurrent conferences. We also propose to produce cross-over sessions between two and possibly all three groups - and we welcome proposals which deal with the relationship between evil, women, femininity and/or violence and/or femininities and masculinities.

What to Send:

4th Global Conference: Living Responsibly

4th Global Conference: Living Responsibly

Tuesday 6th May - Thursday 8th May 2014
Lisbon, Portugal

Call For Presentations:

How can we live responsibly, taking care of one another and of our planet? This is the question faced by everyone who wants, so far as they can, to do what is right, and it is at the heart of Living Responsibly: reflecting on the ethical decisions of everyday life.

We face ethical decisions every day, whether we are aware of it or not. Or at any rate, we face decisions that have ethical significance. For example, we have to decide how we will behave towards others, including family, friends and strangers. We have to decide what we will eat and where we should shop for food, clothes and the other essentials of modern life if we support the idea that workers, wherever they are, should be paid fairly for their labour. And we have to decide how far we are willing to share what we have with others who have less. Alongside such decisions, we face others that arise from our awareness of the ways in which our actions can impact on the environment. In the early 21st century, the issues that surround human induced climate change are among the most important for many of those who aspire to live responsibly. As a result they are mindful of how they build, heat and light their homes and about where and how they travel, both locally and further afield. They are also increasingly mindful of the relative environmental costs of the food, clothing and other goods that they purchase, depending on where and how they are produced and packaged, how far and by what means they are transported, and so on.

Of course issues about what it is to lead a responsible life are found not only at a personal level, but also at a professional and political level. Practitioners of a wide variety of professions, including medicine, psychology and social work; journalism, tourism and the arts; architecture, civil engineering and the law, engage in reflection about ethical issues as part of their daily practice. Ethical behaviour and accountability in public life; in the media and in business are significant concerns for many citizens; Corporate Social Responsibility is high on the agenda for many companies and most professions have an ethical code with which its members are expected to comply.

Living Responsibly: reflecting on the ethical issues of everyday life, will facilitate dialogue about what it means to behave ethically; what motivates ethical behaviour, and how we can live in ways that are respectful of others and respectful of the planet.

Abstracts are invited about any aspect of ethical issues in everyday life, of which the following suggested topics and questions are merely exemplars:

FOOD
-What should we eat and where should we buy our food?
-Should concerns about animal welfare turn us into vegetarians, or persuade us only to eat meat from animals that have been reared humanely?
-What are the ethical arguments for and against the use of chemicals in farming and the introduction of genetically modified crops?
-Is it really morally better to eat organic, locally produced food?
-What' more important - the air miles it takes to bring my green beans from Kenya, or the fact that the Kenyan farmer who grows them gets at least some money, because I buy them?
-Do organically fed, free range chickens really enjoy their lives more than factory made ones?
-Is eating organically grown beef really more ethical?

CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
-What should we do about the problem of global warming?
-Will it really make any difference if we recycle; consume less energy and take fewer foreign holidays?
-Should I pay optional carbon offsetting charges every time I fly?
-What will we do when the oil runs out?
-How, really, can we decide on the relative merits of wind farms, nuclear power and the consumption of non-renewable energy sources?
-What can I do about the destruction of the rainforests and the depletion of the earth's resources?

RELATING TO AND CARING FOR OTHERS
-What ethical demands do personal relationships with family or friends place on us?
-Does the role of 'parent' or 'spouse' create particular ethical responsibilities?
-What special ethical considerations do sexual relationships involve?
-Should we give money to beggars in the street, even if we suspect they will use it for drugs and alcohol?
-How can we keep children safe and allow them to grow to their full potential, wherever they live?
-Do we have ethical obligations to strangers, whether they are from our society or more distant ones, that conflict with our obligations to friends and loved ones?
-How responsible are we for those who are less well off than we are? (in both developing and developed countries).
-Is it irresponsible to buy our clothes from cut price shops that source them from manufacturers that pay their workers such low wages that they are barely better off than slaves?
-Can we be sure that by buying our clothes from 'higher end' shops, we are contributing to better welfare for the workers in developing counties who help to manufacture them?
-Must we donate to every global disaster fund, even if we believe that our money may not reach those who need our help?
-Should I feel guilty about the plight of folk in developing countries if their own governments are that are squandering their GDP on warfare?

BUSINESS, PUBLIC LIFE AND THE PROFESSIONS
-What does it take for a business to be ethically sound?
-What should be done about corruption in public life?
-Is 'corporate social responsibility' about doing good, or about gaining market share?
-Should multinationals rule the world?
-What's fair about 'fairtrade'?
-Isn't 'Responsible and sustainable tourism' just another way of capturing a share of the market?
-What is the point of professional codes of ethics in, for example, medicine, psychology, social work, the media and the law? Do they really ensure that their members act more ethically?
-Should we buy newspapers published by companies that have a track record of unethical behaviour?

Living responsibly, caring for others and the planet is, of course, a complex business, because so often different sets of demands conflict with one another. The Steering Group welcomes abstracts for papers and practical workshops that aim to raise issues, or to offer strategies for tackling the problems faced by those who aspire to living responsibly. We particularly welcome the submission of pre-formed panel proposals.

In order to support and encourage interdisciplinarity engagement, it is our intention to create the possibility of starting dialogues between the parallel events running during this conference. Delegates are welcome to attend up to two sessions in each of the concurrent conferences. We also propose to produce cross-over sessions between two and possibly all three groups â€" and we welcome proposals which deal with the relationship between the experience of prison, and/or responsible and ethical living and/or disability and sexuality.

E-mails should be entitled: RL4 Abstract Submission.

5th Global Conference: Storytelling: Global Reflections on Narrative

5th Global Conference: Storytelling: Global Reflections on Narrative

Saturday 10th May - Tuesday 13th May 2014
Lisbon, Portugal

Call for Presentations:

Human life is conducted through story, because the telling of stories comes naturally to us. Almost every time we speak we engage in storytelling, and sharing stories is arguably the most important way we have of communicating with others about who we are and what we believe; about what we are doing and have done; about our hopes and fears; about what we value and what we don't. We make sense of our lives by telling the stories that we live; and we learn about other lives by listening to the stories told by others. Sometimes, under the influence of the culture in which we are immersed, we live our lives in ways that try to create the stories we want to be able to tell about them.

The importance of the stories we tell and the stories we hear is recognized in every culture. The work of many professions, including medicine, nursing, teaching, the law, psychotherapy and counseling, involves a great deal of time listening to and communicating through stories.

Story is a powerful tool for teachers, because by telling stories they can help students to integrate what they are learning with what they already know, by placing what they learn in a context that makes it easy to recall. Story also plays an important role in academic disciplines like philosophy, theology, anthropology, archaeology and history as well as literature Narrative methods for the collection of data are increasingly used in research in the social sciences and humanities, where the value of getting to know people in a more intimate and less distant way - almost as if we are getting to know them from the inside, is increasingly valued, and academics in many disciplines have begun to realise the value of storytelling as a model for academic writing.

Most of us have lots of experience of relating to other lives through narrative forms, including the stories we encounter as children, the books we read and the TV programmes we watch - the dramas; the documentaries, and for those who will own up to viewing them, the 'reality' TV shows. When we are moved by a play, a movie or a novel, we are moved because we begin imaginatively to live the lives of the characters that inhabit them. If we are lucky we will encounter as we grow up, fictional stories that stay with us like old friends, that we will revisit again and again throughout our lives, as a way of coming to terms with and responding to the things we experience.

Storytelling: global reflections on narrative, will provide a space in which stories about story can be told, and in which the use of stories in the widest possible range of aspects of human life, can be reported. Abstracts are invited for individual contributions and for symposia of three closely related papers. They may address any aspect of story or narrative, including, for example:

- Story as a pedagogical tool in academic disciplines such as history; anthropology, psychology, theology, cultural theory, medicine, law, philosophy, education, and archaeology.

- Narrative and the gathering of stories of lived experience, as a research approach in any area of academic, professional and public life.

- The place of story and storytelling in the practice of journalism; PR advertising; conflict resolution; architecture; religion; tourism, politics and the law, and in clinical contexts such as medicine, psychotherapy, nursing and counseling.

- Finally abstracts may feature storytelling in any aspect of culture, including music (from opera to heavy metal, folk and sacred music); fine art; theatre; literature; cinema and digital storytelling.

Alongside traditional conference papers, earlier conferences in the Storytelling: global reflections on narrative project have included a huge range of presentations, including traditional storytelling; the screening of award winning films; theatrical performances (including cabaret) and workshops aimed at engaging participants in active learning about story and its possibilities in, for example, research and therapy. This has enriched our conversations greatly, and so participants are encouraged to propose presentations of all kinds.

The Steering Group particularly welcomes the submission of pre-formed panel proposals.

In order to support and encourage interdisciplinarity engagement, it is our intention to create the possibility of starting dialogues between the parallel events running during this conference. Delegates are welcome to attend up to two sessions in each of the concurrent conferences. We also propose to produce cross-over sessions between two and possibly all three groups â€" and we welcome proposals which deal with the relationship between Teenagers, visual culture, and/or urban popcultures, subcultures and/or storytelling.
