9th Global Conference: Pluralism, Inclusion and Citizenship

9th Global Conference
Pluralism, Inclusion and Citizenship

Friday 14th March - Sunday 16th March 2014
Prague, Czech Republic

Call for Presentations:

"Pluralism" allows for the diffusion of power rather than the concentration; in this sense, there is a continuous interaction between power and pluralism. Pluralism means diversity, and the more diverse voices there are, the less concentrated power is.

Within this context existing economic, political, social and cultural constructs have resulted in paradigms with variants of power. This has been made possible by and is intertwined with institutional consolidation. Business firms, households, public agencies, government departments/agencies and non-governmental institutions have all reacted to these consolidations by creating, promoting and securing, values and knowledge that have greatly impacted on how to determine a rational understanding of power distributions.

Pluralism as the contextual framework for rational thinking has allowed for and created the vision that there are pluralities of diverse facts and passage of time amongst other things, for the consolidation of these processes that permeates throughout the diaspora. This vision, though, can sometimes easily allow for, instances of pure speculations. Facts are actually strongly influenced by contexts, as context brings real knowledge to existing objective data.

The Pluralism Project, thus far, has embodied the ontology of knowledge creation from all groupings acknowledging that there is subjectivity in creating objectivity. The focus of the project has been to create a platform for an international, interdisciplinary exchange of ideas to explore awareness of the responses to such paradigmatic and institutional policies and processes in advancing counter positions that translate into pluralism.

The project has moved its focus to the realities of paradigm consolidation in general and the imbalances of power in reality.

The 9th Global Conference on Pluralism, Inclusion and Citizenship will build on the previous conferences. 'Rhetoric to Reality of Power' summarises the way the project has developed over previous years and they have acknowledged that facts are almost always contested and contexts are value loaded.

Keeping with these observations, this years event will mainly focus on finding new and hitherto established ways for:

- Determining the rules of power balance, practices of empowerment and disempowerment in context
- Specifying the pros and cons of contexts serving as the ultimate power in defining facts when dealing with issues of pluralism and inclusion
- Resolving ontological quarrels: citizenship versus exclusion
- The Cultures of Power.
- Measuring traits of citizenship that challenge the established notions of Pluralism, Identity and Inclusion
- Creation of communities of inclusion
- Examining experiences and learn how to manage disconnectedness
- Understanding influences for inclusion of diasporas
- Analysing the process of exclusion to find ways for inclusion in pluralistic populations.

MediAsia 2013 Conference Themes:
1) Social Media and Responsibility; Globalization and Internationalization
2) Connectedness, Identity and Alienation

About the Conference Themes and Streams, see below.

1) Social Media and Responsibility; Globalization and Internationalization
As technological innovations and advances have created an ever-growing media net, and where lines have become increasingly blurred between users and consumers, questions of media accountability continue to be a constant source of discussion. Media organizations around the world are becoming increasingly socially, ethnically and culturally diverse, both as a consequence of globalization and in response to internationalization. Social media has infused itself in the lives of every young person in the developed world today. And the types of social media that we use are ever growing, evolving and changing. The way we communicate has also changed dramatically moving further away from face-to-face communication.

2) Connectedness, Identity and Alienation
Being connected through social networking sites has become an accepted form of communication in today's digitalized world. People can spend hours a day talking on mobile phones, on Skype, or on the Internet, which gives the impression that we are a more connected world than ever before. And communication is lauded. Because of the massive information flow we can call ourselves perhaps the most connected age in history. But is this connectedness, however, real or illusory? Quantity of communication does not guarantee quality. For example, to many sensitive people, when they call a number and hear the words "Please listen to the following options" the sense of connectedness suddenly becomes alienating. The crude mechanics entailed can make people feel suspicious, isolated, and even threatened by an invisible structure they cannot penetrate. A raft of serious existential issues arises out of this. What impact does this have on the self whose identity in the time/space continuum, in the rapidly changing environment, and in these manufactured structures, depends for its development on interaction with perceived reality? What becomes the definition of the human? And what of the awareness of the transcendent in the human spirit from which ethics and aesthetics depend for their existence? Far from being questions of the present moment, these are parameters that will dominate the central problem of human self-understanding as we progress further into the uncharted waters of a highly uncertain future.

The Conference themes are designed to inspire invitations of submissions that approach these topics from a variety of perspectives and approaches. However, the submission of other topics for consideration is also welcome and we also encourage sessions within and across a variety of disciplines and fields related to Media and Mass Communication, including the following streams:

1st Global Conference: Letters and Letter Writing

1st Global Conference
Letters and Letter Writing

Tuesday 18th March - Thursday 20th March 2014
Prague, Czech Republic

Call for Presentations

The letter has been one of the most important forms of communication over thousands of years across many cultures and continents. Whether personal, professional or an open statement of intent it can covey the most intimate messages or declare the most inflammatory of declarations. It can be delivered by hand, by postman, by pigeon, by bottle, by smartphone, by internet connection or even by space ship. It can be cherished, collected, published, censored, blogged, stolen, steamed open, torn up, buried, displayed. It can be written on paper, papyrus, skin, in the sand, in wax, on sweet wrappers and on computer screens. It can be written with quills, pens, keyboards, chalk and in ink, in blood, in lemon juice, in light, with love, with hate, with desperation, with pride, with humiliation and with satisfaction. Correspondingly, it can take seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks or even years to reach its destination, whether sent to someone in the next room, or via a time capsule to people 50 years in the future. A letter is not just the means to communicate to others, but a way in which we communicate who, what and where we are and the times that we live in, consequently, being as much about the interconnectedness of identity, place and culture through time as it is about the immediate connection to those around us.

A striking example of such interconnectedness and entanglement survives from ancient Rome in the Letters to Atticus of Marcus Tullius Cicero written between 68-44 BCE. Originally hand written on papyri using a reed pen, they were delivered using a network of slaves often taking up to 4 weeks to reach their destination. Intended only to be read by his friend, this private correspondence was published by an unknown editor sometime after Cicero's death and enjoyed as a literary work. Now available as both book and hypertext, its rich contents provide valuable information on many aspects of Roman life, not to mention the history of his times.

This timely consideration of the forms, materials and methods used to connect to ourselves and to others in and through time invites abstracts on the following themes for any historical period or geographical location:

-The beginnings (archaeology and early human writings)
-The death of the letter (and its reincarnation through technology, email)
-Role in important events (private, public, real, imagined or literary)
-Cultural significance of
-As diary
-As historical source
-As literature or within a literary work
-As biography
-As art or visual significance of
-The physical form (baked clay, waxed wooden tablets, parchment)
-The writing materials (reed pen, quill, ink, biro, typewriter)
-Contents of letters (love, politics, friendship, business, philosophy, consolation)
-Forms of delivery (couriers, private or public postal services)
-Intended readers (individual, family, group) and confidentiality issues
-Letters lost and letters found
-Letters as texts or texts as letters
-Published versus unpublished
-Handwriting and letter writing conventions: construction, syntax, language, spelling and symbols
-Letter-writers: male and female
-Authorship: anonymity or identity statement
-Queering the letter?
-Weaponizing the letter?
-Intercepted or "leaked" letters
-The future of letter writing

4th Global Conference: Experiential Learning in Virtual Worlds

4th Global ConferenceExperiential Learning in Virtual Worlds

Saturday 22nd March â€" Monday 24th March 2014
Prague, Czech Republic

Call for Presentations:

Interest in 3D virtual worlds and their application to learning have increased significantly in recent years. They play an increasingly important role for people in both social and work-based contexts, and they challenge many of our assumptions about how we work, teach, learn, and relate to each other. There are many different types of virtual worlds and they are used for a multiplicity of purposes including gaming, play, social networking, learning and development, work, and also business. The experiences gained in virtual worlds can influence who we are in the physical world, and vice versa. What are we learning through those experiences and how transferable is that learning from one domain to another?

The main aims of this conference are to increase our understanding of experiential learning in virtual worlds, both formal and informal, to share experience and best practice, and to debate future possibilities for learning in virtual worlds. We believe the conference will be of interest to educators, researchers, students, independent scholars, trainers, virtual world users, and anyone interested in what happens in virtual worlds and what it means for us as human (or virtual) beings.

For the purpose of this call for papers, we define virtual worlds as 3D, immersive, graphical environments, representing realistic or imaginary worlds, in which users are co-presented as animated characters (avatars) and interact with each other and the worlds' contents. We recognise the diversity and contested nature of experiential learning in virtual worlds and welcome papers that challenge this definition or shed new light on our understanding.

However, in order to be considered, papers must align with the broad purpose of the conference. For example: a paper about the use of an LMS (Learning Management System) or VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) to support learning will not be considered because neither is a virtual world according to most contemporary definitions. However, a paper which explores the integration of virtual worlds with VLEs, eg Sloodle, would be considered.

As it is such a broad subject area, Experiential Learning in Virtual Worlds precludes a definitive list of sub-topics, but the following themes are indicative of the kind of topics envisaged by this Call for Presentations.

Indicative Themes

-3D games and critical thinking
-Arts and entertainment in virtual worlds
-Assessment and evaluation in virtual worlds
-Augmented reality
-Bringing the virtual into the real world
-Education, training and learning in virtual worlds
-Ethic issues and dilemmas, eg in research and workplace simulations
-Identity, presence and self in virtual worlds
-Philosophy of education in virtual worlds
-Redefining the virtual of 3D virtual worlds
-Research methods in virtual worlds
-Sociological research in the Metaverse
-The shift from desktop apps to the web, tablets and smartphones
-Transfer of learning from virtual worlds to the physical world}
-Types of virtual worlds
-Virtual humans and non-player characters (NPCs) in education
-Virtual world technologies
-Virtual worlds and gamification
-Virtual worlds in health, social care, counseling and psychology
-Virtual worlds used for corporate training
-Where are virtual worlds headed in the future?
-Why should we learn in virtual worlds?

Presentations, papers, performances and live demonstrations will be considered on any relevant topic or theme. The Steering Group also welcomes the submission of preformed panel proposals.
