Developmental Student Success

Developmental Student Success
April 1st, 2010 (focus: hybrid course work)
April 8th, 2010 (focus: developmental writing)
Online webinars
Host: Innovative Educators

NOTE: You can register for one or both. Payment
is not required prior to date of event.
Participating institutions receive access to the
recording for one full year.

WEBINAR 1
Title: Developmental Students: Using Hybrid
Coursework to Improve Electronic Literacy
Date: Thursday, April 1st, 1:00-2:30pm EDT
http://www.innovativeeducators.org/retention_p/782.htm

OVERVIEW
Literacy is more than reading and writing via
paper in our post-modern age. Developmental
students - underprepared or misprepared - need
strategies for navigating and using screen-based
mediums as much as they need to learn how to
handle traditional print. Using blended learning
in classes that meet both face-to-face and online,
we can help nontraditional students enter the
world of academic discourse, as well as engage
them by utilizing current technologies.

WEBINAR 2
Developmental Writing: Insights on
Instructional Strategies for Student Success
Date: Thursday, April 8th, 1:00-3:00pm EDT
http://www.innovativeeducators.org/retention_p/779.htm

OVERVIEW
This session will offer fresh, specific,
research-based, and research-proven perspectives
on the teaching of developmental writing. Its
foundational content is a body of cognitive
research that includes the presenter's extensive
twenty-year research program and captures the
nature of developmental writing. The presenter
will summarize the research, offering clear
descriptions of what developmental writers know
and do when they compose text and how they differ
from at-level writers. This information points
not only to what developmental writers need to
achieve but also to how they can exceed all
expectations for writing improvement and success,
including the retention and application of skills
studied, through appropriate learning activities.
Within this framework, the session focuses
specifically and in detail on materials, class
activities, and assignments that have proven
successful in raising the achievement rates of
underprepared and reticent writing students.
Discussion will take into account and address some
of the factors that impede developmental writers'
success—lack of motivation, interest, or
engagement; absenteeism; and the stigma often
associated with development placement.

MediAsia 2010 - The Asian Conference on Media and Mass Communication 2010

MediAsia 2010 - The Asian Conference on Media
and Mass Communication 2010
28 to 30 October 2010
Osaka, Japan

The International Academic Forum, in conjunction
with its global partners, is pleased to announce
the inaugural Asian Conference on Media and
Mass Communication 2010, to be held in Osaka,
Japan, from October 28-30 2010.

Conference Chair: Professor Gary E. Swanson
Mildred S. Hansen Endowed Chair in Journalism
The University of Northern Colorado, USA

Conference Theme: Brave New World

Special Theme 1: Brave New World: Challenges
and Opportunities

The media industry is at a crossroads in many
respects, as it seeks to come to terms with
developments in technology that simultaneously
allow new heights of journalistic excellence to be
reached, as well as the emergence of more
worrying trends. The unparalleled opportunities of
today's connected world have created a new set of
challenges that need to be met, including
questions of power and responsibility, editorial
accountability, and the erosion of more traditional
income streams. How these challenges and
opportunities are confronted will shape the future
of the media industry.

Special Theme 2: Brave New World: Globalization
and Internationalization

Media organizations across the world are
becoming increasingly socially, ethnically and
culturally diverse, both as a consequence of
globalization and in response to
internationalization. What are the positive and
negative effects of these processes? How can the
strangely powerful and yet rhetorically ambiguous
concepts of globalization and internationalization
exert benign and normative influences on the
media industry, and how can they be used to
more detrimental and even sinister effect?

The conference theme, 'Brave New World', invites
submissions that approach this wide topic from a
variety of perspectives and approaches. However,
the submission of other topics for consideration
is welcome and we also encourage sessions within
and across a variety of disciplines and fields
related to Media and Mass Communication,
including:

Advertising
Communication Technology and Digital Media
Communication Theory and Methodology
Critical and Cultural Studies, Gender and
Communication
Film
History
International Communications
Journalism Research and Education
Law and Policy
Magazine
Media Ethics
Mass Communication, Society and Globalization
Media and Sport
Media Education Research
Media Management and Economics
Newspaper
Political Communication and Satire
Public Relations
Radio-TV journalism

Visual Communication

The deadline for abstracts/proposals is 1 July
2010.
